A Quentin Tarantino project with Walton Goggins is finding new success nearly 15 years after the film's theatrical run. Known as one of Hollywood's filmmakers to go heavily into violence through his stories, one of Tarantino's movies from over a decade ago is being discovered by a different audience.
Django Unchained, which was released in theaters all the way back in December 2012, is climbing the streaming charts on Hulu (which has been folded into Disney+). The R-rated Western is currently trending at #1 for the platform, while Tarot is sitting at #2, followed by The Mummy at #3, Tin Soldier at #4, and lastly Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere at #5.
The Django Unchained cast was headlined by Jamie Foxx as Django Freeman, featuring Christoph Waltz as Dr. King Schultz, and Leonardo DiCaprio as Calvin J. Candie, one of the central villains in the Western movie. Kerry Washington portrayed Broomhilda "Hildi" von Shaft, while Samuel L. Jackson and Goggins appeared as Stephen and Billy Crash, respectively.
Having grossed $449 million at the worldwide box office, Django Unchained was reportedly made for $100 million. The Foxx-starring film went on to get nominated for five Academy Award categories, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. The three categories for which the film won Oscars were Waltz as Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Editing.
In ScreenRant's Django Unchained movie review, Ben Kendrick shared how, despite some "exceptionally indulgent moments," the 2012 entry was "another sharp and enjoyable Tarantino effort." However, Kendrick also added that this "is easily one of Tarantino's most unbalanced films - as the narrative often lingers on scenes that don't carry much weight in the larger storyline - while moments that should carry strong emotional punch come up short."
