Warning: Spoilers ahead for Fallout season 2!Fallout season 3 is happening, and there's already plenty of information on what to expect with the upcoming season of Prime Video's hit video game adaptation.

Season 2 begins with Lucy (Ella Purnell) and the Ghoul (Walton Goggins) journeying through the wasteland toward New Vegas. Meanwhile, Maximus (Aaron Moten) essentially starts a civil war within the Brotherhood before fleeing with the cold fusion relic.

In the past timeline, Goggins' Cooper Howard uncovers more dark secrets regarding Vault-Tec, including his wife Barbara's involvement, and what's really going on with Robert House (Justin Theroux). As Fallout season 2 comes to an end, sights will quickly turn to what fans can expect with season 3.

Prime Video officially renewed Fallout for season 3 in May 2025, with the announcement coming seven months before season 2 even debuted. Based on Fallout season 1's viewership success and positive reception, the season 2 renewal felt like a no-brainer. However, Fallout season 3's early renewal confirms that Prime Video continues to have a lot of faith in the video game adaptation.

Prime Video has yet to provide direct viewership statistics for Fallout season 2, though Amazon has announced (via Deadline) that it's the streamer's sixth most-watched season ever. From a reception standpoint, Fallout season 2's Rotten Tomatoes score is a tad higher than season 1, coming in at 97% from critics and 96% from viewers.

Fallout Season 3 Is Expected To Start Filming In May 2026

With Fallout season 3's early renewal, the series was able to get a head start on production rather than waiting for the decision following season 2's conclusion. Reports already suggest that Fallout season 3 will be filming during the summer of 2026, with a start date sometime in May, according to Gamespot.

Even with season 2's filming delays stemming from the LA wildfires in 2025, Fallout was able to debut its latest season by the end of the year. Based on the fast-tracked renewal and production, Fallout season 3 will look to extend its yearly release trend with a hopeful late 2027 release.

Fallout season 2's cast primarily followed the three key players from the show's first season: Lucy (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and the Ghoul/Cooper Howard (Walton Goggins). The trio will continue to be a major focus of Fallout season 3, though each of their circumstances has drastically changed compared to the start of season 2.

As for the new cast additions in Fallout season 2, Macaulay Culkin's Legion character seems to be getting a bigger role in season 3 after taking over as the new Caesar. Justin Theroux will also certainly be back as Robert House in some form, especially as season 3 will continue diving deeper into Cooper's backstory in the past timeline.

Hopefully, Johnny Pemberton will continue with his supporting roles, considering how Thaddeus could be turning into a Centaur. In addition to vault dwellers, like Norm, Chet, and Steph, it will be interesting to see if Ron Perlman's super mutant character makes a reappearance in Fallout season 3.

Fallout season 2's ending confirms that the Enclave is the true villain of the show, and their role as the real masterminds will come into play for both timelines in season 3. Steph, in particular, sends out a message to the Enclave to initiate "Phase 2," and whatever they're up to, Hank is also involved.

Hank, however, will no longer be his normal self after Lucy equips him with a mind control device. Before his mind is reset, though, Hank admits that he sent out a batch of his chip test subjects into the Wasteland, but it's unclear what they were sent out to do. Granted, it will likely involve season 3's Enclave storyline.

Aside from the Enclave, war will also be a focal point of Fallout season 3. Lucy and Maximus finally reunite in Fallout season 2's finale, but it's not until both have essentially helped start wars. The Brotherhood's civil war has begun, and Caesar's Legion is set to face the NCR in Vegas.

The Ghoul, on the other hand, is getting out of Vegas and heading to Colorado, setting up another adventurous journey for Goggins' character. Though Barbara and Janey aren't in New Vegas, the Ghoul finds a Colorado postcard left by his wife, giving him the hope he needs to continue on his mission to find his family.

Fallout's future beyond season 3 is still unknown. When looking at the video game franchise in terms of lore and worldbuilding, there's plenty of material for the show to utilize for the long-term. Maximus actor Aaron Moten indicated that Fallout could run five or six seasons in total, which certainly seems possible as long as viewership and reception justify its continuation on Prime Video.

While in-universe spinoffs aren't off the table, fans awaiting Fallout's return for season 3 will have something else to look forward to. Prime Video has ordered Fallout Shelter, a reality competition based on the franchise. The series, which is also expected to film this summer, will feature contestants showing off their survival skills while living in a Vault-Tec-inspired vault.
