The Philadelphia Phillies went to the World Series in 2022, but have failed to get back since. They could be looking to shake things up and make some changes.
Alec Bohm was a hot name in trade rumors during last year's winter meetings. He was an All-Star in 2024. His numbers declined this year, but he was still a solid player. Now a year away from free agency, Bohm could be on the move if the Phillies try to upgrade at third base.
The Phillies would need to find a third baseman if they trade Bohm, but they could use him to fill a huge need. The Phillies desperately need an outfielder who can bring some production to their offense. ESPN's Eric Karabell proposed the Phillies trade Bohm to the Boston Red Sox in a package that returns Jarren Duran.
..."These lightning-rod players certainly are not coming off their best seasons and perhaps each needs the proverbial change of scenery," wrote Karabell. "The Red Sox may need someone to play third base, and Bohm, while no match for Alex Bregman, is a capable hitter and defender. The Phillies could then get a more consistent third baseman who enjoys playing in Philadelphia. Duran would fill Philadelphia's center-field need, and it would create some opportunity in a crowded Boston outfield. See, trades can work out for both teams!"
If Bregman leaves, the Red Sox could simply turn to Marcelo Mayer at third base. However, Duran is part of an outfield logjam, and the 2024 All-Star Game MVP has solid trade value. Getting a one-year rental in Bohm while Mayer establishes himself, along with a prospect, would not be a bad move for the Red Sox.
Duran is under club control through 2028 and would be a massive upgrade for the Phillies. He led the American League in triples last season and had a .774 OPS. Meanwhile, the Red Sox would alleviate their outfield logjam and get a potential trade deadline chip in Bohm.
