Harrison Ford’s name is one synonymous with some of the biggest box office winners over the last several decades. His work in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises and in films like Witness have solidified his legacy as one of the most talented long-running actors in the biz. And yet, even legends like Ford have a crash and burn project every so often. But, with the negative, there’s always a shot at redemption. Right now, FlixPatrol reports that the performer’s survival thriller, The Call of the Wild, is picking up steam on streaming, where it currently holds the seventh spot on Netflix’s global Top 10 chart. Surrounded by more-of-the-time films like Troll 2, Jingle Bell Heist and In Your Dreams, the adventure flick seemingly sneaked its way in overnight with audiences around the world eager to give the Chris Sanders-helmed title another shot.
Aside from an underdog story, there’s nothing that audiences love more than an adaptation. With The Call of the Wild, viewers get both. Based on the unforgettable and often required reading 1903 novel of the same name by Jack London, the story is one of perseverance when the odds couldn’t be stacked any higher against you. In the film, audiences meet Buck, a German Shepherd mix who is stolen from his home in sunny California and shipped to the Yukon where he is forced to join a pack of sled dogs. Through day and night, the dog team works in frigid and life-threatening conditions, with Buck eventually finding his way into the care of a rugged outdoorsman named John Thornton (Ford). Together, the pair set off to uncover a life of their own on their own terms with plenty of danger and adventure around every turn.
‘The Call of the Wild’s Box Office Blunder
With Ford leading the team, the rest of the ensemble behind The Call of the Wild was just as impressive, with supporting performances from Omar Sy, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford and Cara Gee. Yet, even a stacked call sheet couldn’t save the movie from a horrendous run at the box office. Against its estimated $135 million budget, the movie fell incredibly short, earning just $111.1 million at the box office during its race in cinemas. On top of that, critics railed against the film’s usage of CGI, which is what a solid portion of the production cost went towards in bringing the dogs into their tundra-like surroundings.
All in all, The Call of the Wild is exactly what one might expect from a movie about a dog — a tearjerker. But, that doesn’t mean that all dogs don’t have their day, with the film now a streaming hit on Netflix.
