Phoenix Suns coach provides major update on Grayson Allen's injury

SACRAMENTO – Phoenix Suns coach Jordan Ott provided an update on Grayson Allen’s injury status going into Wednesday’s NBA Cup West Group A game Nov. 26 against the Sacramento Kings at Golden 1 Center.

Allen will miss his sixth straight game Wednesday as he took a knee to his right quad in the first half of a Nov. 13 home win against the Indiana Pacers.

“Thought it was day-to-day,” Ott said during pregame availability. “It's dragged on a little bit. It was just not your average quad contusion. He got a good one, but he's still making progress. The goal is to continue to assess, see the progress that he makes day-to-day and get him out there this weekend.”

The Suns (11-7) follow their NBA Cup game at Sacramento with another one Nov. 28 at defending NBA champion Oklahoma City.

Phoenix and OKC (17-1) are both 2-0 in group play while Sacramento (5-13) is 0-2.

Phoenix then faces the Denver Nuggets in the second of a back-to-back Nov. 29 at home. The Suns head back on the road for a Dec. 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers.

“The last couple of days where it's like, OK, he's making progress, but he's not out there with us,” Ott said. “He had swelling. We don't know exactly how long it was going to take. He's still in a good place. Just now we're not practicing, there are so many of these games you don't see him out there to go up and down, 5-on-5, but he did his stuff post shootaround today. The goal is to get him out there as fast as possible.”

Ott added he’d like to see Allen play some 5-on-5 before having him return to action, but finding time to do that amid their schedule is a challenge.

“It's hard when you have shootaround to really take reps away from the guys that are playing in the games,” Ott said. “We're balancing that and as he progresses, he can do more and more.”

Allen is averaging a career-high 18.5 points, shooting 44.7% from 3 in 13 games in his third season in Phoenix.

"Just another ball handler," Suns star guard Devin Booker said. "Another creator. Jalen (Green), too. We've only had one game of that, but we still have to find ways. We still have a talented group regardless. We've been saying next man up mentality and we have the talent in here no matter who is in the lineup to find ways to get wins."

Ott also addressed Ryan Dunn’s injury status. Dunn will miss his third straight game on Nov. 26 with a right wrist sprain.

“He's obviously handling the ball a little bit more,” Ott said. “The shooting piece will come when he feels good. That could take a jump at any time."

Green has played just two games with a right hamstring strain.
