President Donald Trump announced that South Africa will not receive an invitation to the 2026 G20 summit in Florida, following the U.S. decision to skip the leaders’ summit.

South Africa has criticized the move, describing it as a “punitive” response. During the summit that was held in Johannesburg, the G20 approved a joint statement on climate change and other major global issues, even though the United States disagreed. This caused the White House to claim that the country was attempting to take advantage of its leadership role to undermine America.

Of course, Trump decided to take his opinions on South Africa to social media. "At the conclusion of the G20, South Africa refused to hand off the G20 Presidency to a Senior Representative from our U.S. Embassy, who attended the Closing Ceremony," the President of the United States wrote in a post on Truth Social. He continued, "Therefore, at my direction, South Africa will NOT be receiving an invitation to the 2026 G20, which will be hosted in the Great City of Miami, Florida next year."

Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa's office, responded to Trump's post. They condemned his behavior and called his comments "regrettable."

It is regrettable that despite the efforts and numerous attempts by President Ramaphosa and his administration to reset the diplomatic relationship with the U.S., President Trump continues to apply punitive measures against South Africa based on misinformation and distortions about our country.

Ramaphosa added that because the U.S. delegation did not show up for the summit, the formal G20 presidency materials were handed over to a representative from the U.S. Embassy in South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

Instruments of the G20 Presidency were duly handover to a U.S. Embassy official at the Headquarters of South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation.

Trump announced that his administration would freeze all funding and subsidies to South Africa, which will be put into action immediately. Additionally, in February 2025, he issued an executive order that would cut financial aid to the country. His reasoning was that he disagreed with its land reform policies and the genocide complaint against Israel filed through the International Court of Justice.
