While not every viewer has a mental list of all the new TV shows and movies that will begin streaming every month, streaming services do their best to make sure viewers know what to look forward to. But, when it comes to Apple TV's French series Traqués (The Hunt), the streaming service is doing their best to divert attention away from it instead. After the show was pulled from Apple TV's December lineup, Deadline confirmed that the series is being investigated over suspicions of plagiarism.

The accusations were first brought to light by French media expert Clement Garin and later reported by Apple Insider on Tuesday, November 25. Per the reports, the series, which was initially listed as being created, written and directed by César-nominated filmmaker Cédric Anger (Next Time I’ll Aim for the Heart), has uncanny plot similarities with Shoot, a 1973 novel by American author Douglas Fairbairn. Most notably, the novel has already been adapted onscreen in a 1976 film with the same name.

Apple TV Has Erased Any Evidence of 'Traqués'

Following the reports, the studio behind the series, French production company Gaumont (Lupin, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, Totems), confirmed that the show has been postponed and won't be airing as anticipated. “The broadcast of our series The Hunt has been temporarily postponed,” Gaumont said in a statement to Deadline. “We are currently conducting a thorough review to address any questions related to our production. We take intellectual property matters very seriously.”

In addition to the statement, every evidence of the show online, including its trailer and information about the show, has been erased. Originally, the show was set to premiere its first two episodes on Wednesday, December 3. The six-episode season was then set to release weekly episodes until the finale on December 31. Now, the premiere date, let alone a premiere at all, hang in the balance.

What Was 'Traqués' Going to Be About?

Prior to the plagiarism allegations, Traqués was gearing up to be a gripping thriller. The premise follows Franck (Benoît Magimel) and his longtime friends as they embark on another one of their ritual hunting weekends. But when another group of hunters inexplicably targets them and shoots one of them, the outing spirals into violence. The shot leads to retaliation, and the four friends flee the scene, joined by a dark and tragic secret. After the scare, Franck attempts to return to his normal life with his wife Krystel (Mélanie Laurent), but his paranoia that he's being followed and targeted begins to set in. In addition to Magimel and Laurent, the series was also set to star Manuel Guillot, Frédéric Maranber, Cédric Appietto, and Damien Bonnard.

As a comparison, the synopsis of Fairbairn's 1973 novel also outlines a hunter named Rex and his crew as they embark upon a hunting trip in the Canadian wilderness. "But their weekend is cut short by a rival band of hunters who graze the head of one of his buddies," the Goodreads blurb reads. "Another of Rex’s friends returns fire, killing the shooter… Rex decides not to contact the authorities… but becomes convinced that the dead man’s companions are going to come after him and his friends."

While viewers and critics have yet to see Traqués on Apple TV for themselves, it's safe to say the premise of the show is indeed very similar to the novel it's being accused of plagiarizing. With a similar setting, conflict, and developing paranoia from the main character, French media expert Garin and outlets alike were certainly in their rights to raise their suspicions. Now that the show has been shelved by Gaumont and Apple TV, the studios have seemingly few options, including making a deal with the Fairbairn estate for the rights, or scrapping the series altogether. Regardless of what solution the studios come up with, Traqués won't be reaching Apple TV anytime soon.
