NEED TO KNOW

  • San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Juan Jennings slapped Carolina Panthers safety Tre'von Moehrig during a scuffle following Monday Night Football

  • Jennings said after the game he did so in response to a punch Moehrig gave him to the groin following a play late in the 4th quarter

  • The 49ers coach defended Jennings and called Moehrig's initial punch a "cheap shot"

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Juan Jennings and Carolina Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig won't be hanging out any time soon.

Moments after their Monday Night Football matchup ended on Monday, Nov. 24, cameras cut to Jennings, 28, being dragged away from an apparent scuffle by teammates and other coaching assistants. The ESPN broadcast then showed a replay of Jennings smacking Moehrig, 26, in the face and then taking several swings at the Panthers safety as others rushed in to break them apart.

ESPN broadcaster Joe Buck appeared confused as to what started the scuffle before producers quickly pulled up a replay of a moment from late in the 4th quarter that showed Moehrig appear to swing a closed-fist punch directly at Jennings’ unprotected crotch, causing the 49ers receiver to keel over and then plead with officials to penalize the Panthers defender.

After the game, which the 49ers won 20-9, Jennings angrily blasted Moehrig’s behavior.

"I was just responding to some childish behavior," Jennings told reporters when asked about his postgame punch, according to ESPN.

After the game, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanhan agreed and called Moehrig's punch a "cheap shot."

Jennings surmised that maybe Moehrig took exception to him playing hard through the end of each play, which sometimes can lead players to see that as teetering on the edge of late hits. Still, Jennings said Moehrig’s punch to the groin still shocked and upset him.

"That was just out of nowhere," Jennings told media members after his team’s win. "I think it's probably just like I was saying, just the history of me playing ball. I play hard. I'm physically stronger than a lot of [defensive backs] out there and a lot of things happen in between the whistles. With me at least."

Moehrig appeared to admit as much after the game, telling reporters from his own team’s locker room that Jennings was “talking” a lot during the game and, to him, continuously kept up the physicality well past the end of plays.

"He was just doing some extra stuff after the play," Moehrig said. "I'll take that one. It wasn't just frustration. It was isolated.''

Moehrig told reporters he thinks he’ll “most likely” get fined for the punch, which was caught on camera despite not being caught by referees in the moment.

Panthers head coach Dave Canales also indicated there would be internal punishment dolled out by the team in some fashion. "I'll get to the bottom of that," Canales said. "I want to see exactly what happened. I haven't had the chance to talk to Tre about that yet. That'll be a conversation.''

The incident is just the latest in a slew of scuffles that have taken place between players throughout the NFL season. Last week, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was suspended one game for spitting in an opponent’s face. Last month, Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch punched Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster after Smith-Schuster took exception to Branch refusing to shake Patrick Mahomes’ hand during the teams’ postgame handshakes.
