Gen V's main characters will return in The Boys' final season, but the spinoff show's future beyond season 2 remains uncertain. While only time will tell whether it will return, a returning Stephen King sci-fi thriller series can perfectly fill the void it left behind.

Spinoffs often come off as forced and unnecessary extensions of well-established and popular franchises. However, Gen V is among the rare spinoff shows that not only expand their parent show's existing lore but also etch their own identities. There are also story beats in Gen V where it seems even more compelling and relatable than The Boys.

Unfortunately, after season 2, Gen V has not officially been renewed on Prime Video. Viewers who miss the spinoff series, though, must watch a new Stephen King TV show that dabbles with similar ideas and themes.

Gen V May Not Return With Another Season, But MGM+’s The Institute Fills The Void

While Gen V's future beyond season 2 remains unknown, viewers who loved the show's portrayal of super-powered teenagers must watch MGM+'s adaptation of Stephen King's The Institute. Like Gen V season 1, The Institute's first installment shows how a secret organization abducts children with superpowers and experiments on them to a serve a perceived greater good.

The covert operation in Gen V takes place right under the central Godolkin University. Meanwhile, a similar shadowy system runs quietly in the background of The Institute on the outskirts of a quaint town. In both, the young characters are brutally experimented on before they reach the end of their wits and set out to punish those who tried to harm them.

In terms of visual spectacle and overall scale, Gen V is far better than The Institute. Gen V also benefits from being a spinoff of one of the best sci-fi shows of the century, The Boys.

However, The Institute dabbles with similar ideas surrounding institutional failure and the burden of responsibility carried by young teenagers when the adults in their lives let them down. The Institute has also been renewed for another season, which is expected to premiere in 2026 itself.

Gen V probably cannot be replaced by any other show, but Stephen King's The Institute can ease the pain of its absence.

Gen V Must Continue Even After The Boys Ends

Since Gen V ties into the larger universe of The Boys, it would make sense for it to end its run with its parent series. Since The Boys season 5 is also the Prime Video show's final installment, it will likely kill off many main characters. This could mean that even Gen V's young supes could end up dead in their final showdown against Homelander and his team.

The Boys season 5 premieres on Prime Video on April 8, 2026.

If that happens, it would not make a lot of sense for Gen V to return.

The show's new installments could still focus on a new generation of supes, but it would just not be the same without Cate, Marie, Emma, Jordan, and Sam. If some of Gen V's young supes characters survive The Boys season 5, though, it would be fun to see how their stories would unfold in a world struggling to rebuild itself after Homelander’s reign.

For now, however, since Gen V season 3 has not been confirmed, viewers must watch MGM+'s adaptation of Stephen King's The Institute while waiting for The Boys season 5.
