Marvel Is Changing Cyclops' Powers Before Avengers: Doomsday (X-Men Theory Explained)

While Marvel has just redefined Cyclops' power levels before Avengers: Doomsday, his optic blasts may receive a major status quo change as well.

Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Cyclops #1

Marvel may be setting the stage for a major Cyclops change ahead of the character's live-action return in Avengers: Doomsday. Having received his own solo series, Scott Summers is currently facing a major crisis, one that may lead to the next major evolution for the X-Men leader.

In Cyclops #1 by Alex Paknadel and Rogê Antônio, Marvel's new series starring Scott Summers sees the X-Men leader on his own in the middle of nowhere while also being hunted by new foes. While Cyclops is also at a major disadvantage by the end of this first issue, it may lead to a major upgrade going forward.

Marvel's New Cyclops #1 Reminds Us Of Scott Summers' Biggest Power Limitation

Cyclops Visor Destroyed in Cyclops #1

Cyclops #1 makes two crucial points about Scott Summers. First, it's confirmed that Cyclops' signature optic blasts carry the concussive force of a hydrogen bomb, reminding us all just how devastating his mutant ability can be when it's fully unleashed.

Secondly, the issue reaffirms that Scott is dependent on his iconic ruby quartz visor to contain those optic blasts, as the plane crash that killed his parents resulted in brain damage during his childhood.

Keeping that in mind, things are not looking good for Scott Summers after his Quinjet is shot down by the New Reavers, resulting in a whole new plane crash that sees Scott's visor being destroyed in the aftermath, forcing Cyclops to keep his eyes shut lest he destroy everything in his vicinity.

With the New Reavers on the hunt and a young mutant girl in need of protecting, the stakes are quite high for Cyclops (who couldn't be more at a disadvantage).

That said, this brand-new plane crash may result in Summers finally unlocking his full potential as this new Marvel series continues. After all, it'd be pretty cool to see Cyclops gaining the control over his mutant power he was always meant to have.

Imagine a Cyclops who could wield his optic blasts visor-free, no longer requiring it to keep his powers in check (though perhaps still wearing it as an aesthetic choice). Without a doubt, it would be a fascinating shift in Cyclops' typical status quo in the comics.
