The Denver Broncos announced that they’ve promoted passing game coordinator Davis Webb to offensive coordinator, as the end game of a series of sudden moves made by head coach Sean Payton was finally revealed. The Broncos also announced that offensive quality control coach Logan Kilgore has been promoted to quarterbacks coach, which was the position Webb previously held.

Webb has been interviewing with multiple teams for a head coaching job, and according to Jeff Legwold of ESPN, he was also targeted as a possible offensive coordinator by the New York Giants and several other teams. Legwold added that Payton has also interviewed passing game coordinator Brian Johnson of the Washington Commanders and Buffalo Bills quarterback coach Ronald Curry as possibilities to replace Lombardi.

The move keeps Webb in Denver, and it also represent the change of voice and new ideas Payton was looking for when he jettisoned Lombardi, who has been with him for 15 years, and Pete Carmichael, who joined the Bills as their new offensive coordinator after being with Lombardi for 18 years.

Webb has been rumored to move up into this slot for some time, and the big question now is whether he’ll be calling plays. Payton has done this for some time, and when he was asked about it during the season, he responded by saying, “no, I think we’re comfortable as an offensive staff with how we’re operating,” according to Legwold.

The 31-year old Webb was a journeyman backup quarterback during his NFL career who played for the New York Giants, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. He was allowed to call plays in the Broncos’ preseason finale last year, but it remains to be seen if that was an actual audition.

Payton has expressed frustration with the offense at various times this season. The Broncos were 14th in the league in scoring with 23.6 points a game, according to Legwold, and they were 10th in offensive EPA and 12th in QBR. Payton wants to run the ball more from different formations that include two backs or multiple tight ends, and having that flexibility is a key goal in this hire.

Stagnation was a big problem for the Denver offense, as they ended up 29th in the percentage of drives that ended in three-and-outs after finishing near the bottom of the league in 2024 as well. In addition, receiver Courtland Sutton was the only Broncos player to finish in the league’s top 48 with receptions of at least 10 yards.
