The Schumacher name is coming to the IndyCar Series.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing announced Monday that Mick Schumacher, 26-year-old son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher, will join the team for the 2026 IndyCar season.

Schumacher will drive the No. 47 Honda as a teammate to Graham Rahal and 2025 series rookie of the year, Louis Foster.

Schumacher, who was born in Switzerland, tested an RLL car on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course October 13.

“Having both an F1 and an endurance background, and having competed in various racing series over the years, I have insights and knowledge that I am sure will contribute to a great partnership,” Schumacher said. “RLL prepared me extremely well during testing already, and I am sure that we can build a lot together.

“I was also immediately excited about the car and the American way of motorsport, which comes across as being more about pure and direct racing, and it is precisely this aspect that I am very much looking forward to. And, of course, I am curious about new experiences and always interested in broadening my horizons. For me, a new journey is beginning here, and I am excited for the season to start.”

Schumacher started 43 F1 races for the Haas team in 2021 and 2022. His best finish was sixth. In 2024 and 2025, he scored three podium finishes for the Alpine team in the WEC series.

Relatively new RLL president Jay Frye, a former IndyCar executive, was instrumental in the signing of Schumacher, who had expressed an interest in moving to IndyCar.

“Opportunities like this are rare, and we couldn’t be more excited to see everything come together,” Frye said. “Mick is an exceptional talent on the track and an outstanding young man off of it. We are very proud to have Mick as part of the RLL family.”

Team co-owner Bobby Rahal said Schumacher was very impressive during the IMS test. “Everyone walked away from that event determined to do what we could to bring Mick into our program,” Rahal said.

Racing regularly on ovals—there are six oval-track races on the 2026 schedule—will be a new experience for Schumacher. He is expected to test on an oval track soon.

Michael Schumacher, one of the most accomplished drivers in motorsports history, suffered serious injuries in a skiing accident in 2013 and remains in a medically induced coma.
