World War II is one of the most critical moments in world history, and even more so for the millions of people it affected. As such a pivotal point in history, WWII has served as the backdrop for numerous works of fiction. In the Finnish action thriller Sisu, Jalmari Helander explores a unique concept using a fictional character during the Lapland War of 1944. The film was an unexpected critical and box office hit, leading to a sequel — Sisu: Road to Revenge — that is currently in theaters. However, the first film is also available to stream on many services worldwide, where viewers are rediscovering the franchise's appeal. Sisu is back on streaming charts in countries like Finland (Netflix), Spain (iTunes), and the United States (Tubi).

The titular sisu is a Finnish concept that lacks a direct English equivalent. It describes the mixture of grit, determination, and zeal that arises when a life-threatening situation confronts someone. Think of it like an adrenaline-fuelled survival instinct. Jorma Tommila stars as Aatami Korpi, a Rambo-esque figure in the Finnish countryside during the late days of the war. Korpi discovers gold deposits somewhere in the land and mines it to sell, but runs into Nazi soldiers who decide to kill him and take the gold. Unbeknownst to them, the man is a legendary — almost mythical — ex-soldier with many Russian war kills. A game of death begins between Korpi and the Nazis as he hunts them down, John Wick-style, and kills them all.

Korpi Lives in 'Sisu: Road to Revenge'

Meanwhile, the movie's sequel premiered in theatres on November 21 and follows Korpi on another bloody mission. Events take place two years later. "Returning to the house where his family was brutally murdered during the war, 'the man who refuses to die' dismantles it, loads it on a truck, and is determined to rebuild it somewhere safe in their honor. When the Red Army commander who killed his family (Stephen Lang) comes back hellbent on finishing the job, a relentless, eye-popping cross-country chase ensues — a fight to the death, full of clever, unbelievable action set pieces," the film's official description reads. Helander returns for the acclaimed sequel, currently rated 96% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. Collider's Jeff Ewing praised the movie for delivering an entertaining experience, despite a bit of the magic from the first being lost. He wrote in his review:

"Altogether, and gratefully, Sisu: Road to Revenge doesn't disappoint. Jorma Tommila commands the screen silently, a feat usually reserved for the greatest of the silent film era, here fueling an orgy of destruction while Stephen Lang provides a stellar antagonist. It's a structurally different riff on the original, but certainly in the same spirit, and Helander found a host of new ways to escalate the violence and spectacle while adding nice comedic notes. There's something to be missed from the first due to the predictability of his path in this iteration, but there are enough surprises and novelties (usually violent) to provoke delight and get adrenaline pumping. Like Aatami Korpi's refusal to die, Jalmari Helander refuses to water down the bloody franchise, and we all benefit."

Stream Sisu on Tubi in the US, and catch the sequel in theaters. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
