If you've been keeping your fingers crossed for The Elder Scrolls 6 and hoping for any morsel of information you can find, there's another Grand RPG on the horizon that absolutely deserves more of your attention, and it just got a massive update.

Upcoming and highly-anticipated Elder Scrolls 6 rival The Wayward Realms is shaking things up after developer OnceLost Games has decided to ditch Unreal Engine 5 for a new proprietary engine. Creative director for OnceLost Games (via YouTube) says that while it is great for certain types of games, UE5 won't cut it for The Wayward Realms.

The Wayward Realms is described as the "spiritual successor to the Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall," with OnceLost Games being helmed by Daggerfall lead developers Ted Peterson & Julian LeFay.

OnceLost Games' Switch To Wicked Engine Is A Bold Move

Unlike The Elder Scrolls 6, players have actually been given tons of gameplay and content from The Wayward Realms, the upcoming grand RPG from the former Daggerfall developers. In a massive update earlier this week (via Steam), OnceLost Games announced it would be getting rid of Unreal Engine 5 in place of a "forked" version of the Wicked engine, which is technically a new proprietary engine.

To nobody's surprise, Unreal Engine 5 presented too many obstacles, and OnceLost Games was struggling to "get the engine running smoothly." Developers insist they are not "starting from scratch," and that they are very close "to parity" with the previous build.

The switch to Wicked will reportedly improve performance and even make The Wayward Realms playable on older hardware, or "10-year old machines." Creative Director for OnceLost Games Victor Villarreal says the new engine is "well optimized" and will enable The Wayward Realms to be "as accessible to people as possible."

There's A New Grand RPG In Town

The Elder Scrolls 6 is easily one of the most anticipated RPGs of the decade, but information on the game is incredibly hard to come by, whereas The Wayward Realms is completely transparent about its development.

The Wayward Realms' switch to Wicked engine might present a brief delay from its anticipated launch, but it's very promising to have a timeline on the table and a finish line in sight, even with a major overhaul to the game's engine. There are very few games that will potentially rival what The Elder Scrolls 6 promises to be, but The Wayward Realms might be at the top of that list.
