Mainz have parted ways with coach Bo Henriksen, the Bundesliga bottom side said on Wednesday.

"Bo Henriksen is no longer the head coach of 1. FSV Mainz 05. The club's sporting management and the Danish coach agreed on Wednesday to end their collaboration with immediate effect," the struggling club wrote in a statement.

Under-23 coach Benjamin Hoffemann will take charge of the senior team on an interim basis until a new permanent coach is appointed, Mainz added. They host Borussia Mönchengladbach on Friday.

Former Midtjylland and Zurich boss Henriksen was hired in February 2024, when the club were in acute danger of relegation. Under his leadership, they managed to stay in the Bundesliga and qualified for the Conference League in the next season.

In the current campaign, however, Mainz are last in the Bundesliga with just one win in 12 games. At least in the Conference League the German club are doing well, sitting fifth with three wins in four matches.

Board member for sport and communication Christian Heidel said: “Mainz 05 owes Bo Henriksen an enormous amount. In what was almost a hopeless situation, he shook the club and the whole city awake and, with his empathy and passion, led us to survival and a year later even into the Conference League.

"But football always brings moments when, for sporting reasons, a fresh start becomes necessary."

Henriksen's bouncy personality and joy for the game inspired Mainz last term, but the loss of top striker Jonathan Burkardt to Eintracht Frankfurt has severely blunted their attack this season.

The 50-year-old said: "Mainz 05 is a wonderful club with wonderful people and wonderful fans. We achieved so much together, and I am truly grateful for all the experiences and for our time together."

His departure comes shortly after fellow Bundesliga strugglers Augsburg dismissed Sandro Wagner. Henriksen has even been talked about in the media as a possible Augsburg candidate.
