Dragon Ball Daima came and went between late 2024 and early 2025, dropping 20 exciting episodes which, while featuring a new story, didn't quite leave a lasting impression on longtime fans. But fortunately, some of YouTube's most popular anime personalities have teamed up to reimagine Toriyama's final created anime saga with Dragon Ball Magic.

Dragon Ball Magic is built upon the original vision of writer Yūko Kakihara for the story that'd become Daima. Given that they were conceived with Toriyama's concepts in mind, it's frustrating that, by the end, the story's writing bears multiple inconsistencies and ditches the potential the anime presented. But with Part 1, this fan project is already making waves.

Dragon Ball Magic Reimagines Daima With TeamFourStar

You Will Quote Everything They Say

To sweeten the pot of this already enticing reimagining of Dragon Ball Daima, Dragon Ball Magic features the voice cast of TeamFourStar, the creators behind the beloved fan project Dragon Ball Z Abridged among others. Part 1 of this features a feature-length batch release of five episodes, with detailed storyboards and emotive voice acting to bring it to life.

But the story features multiple rapid departures from the original Dragon Ball Daima. Not only does it feature a new, more retro-inspired opening theme, it feels like an alternate pathway from how the story first played out. Instead of introducing Gomah as a passive, almost buffoonish leader suddenly thrust into power, even his base form is incredibly dangerous now.

From every step of the production, it's clear that it's made with love, with the familiar fan-favorite TFS voices behind Vegeta and Goku, as well as nice touches like a character-narrated preview of what's next in Part 2. It feels like a classic English dub anime made for and by largely millennials, but it's more than nostalgic, injecting true tension into the anime.

As Dragon Ball Magic is still a newly-released project as of the last 24 hours, it's still uncertain as to whether it'll truly land the plane in the fans' eyes. But it envisions a story that draws out far more of Dragon Ball Daima's promise, such as Gomah confronting Goku's weakened child form in episode #1 now.

But more examples of the tweaked plots indicate a thoroughly researched mission on the creators' parts. This includes not forgetting fascinating Daima plot devices like the Magic Collars, and properly incorporating the anime's world. It also features brand-new moments, like a tournament, its losing contestants seemingly being harvested for their life force, and imposing new demonic characters like Zows.

This includes not forgetting fascinating Daima plot devices like the Magic Collars, and properly incorporating the anime's world.

By the end of Part 1, key Dragon Ball Daima characters like Shin are ambushed in the chaos by a Magic Collar effectively putting him at these oppressors' mercy. The subjects of Gomah genuinely have real cause to feel dread about his rule, and even the circumstances of this wish, necessitated by Goku's Instant Transmission, drives a panicked Degesu's wish.

Everything feels more connected. Gomah's threat is mysterious and urgent, and Goku's physical abilities being altered when turning into a child is more than a momentary setback from Dragon Ball Daima. It's hasty to say this makes the overall incomplete Dragon Ball Magic story better, but it has greater potential, and promises greater consistency, a truly exciting project to follow.
