The Closer is a 7-season police drama headed to Netflix in December, just in time for the holidays. There is a lot coming to Netflix in December. From movies like the Kung Fu Panda franchise to TV shows like the horror series Castle Rock, the streaming platform is filled with new things to watch this winter.
For fans of police procedurals, there are surprisingly few options on Netflix. The streamer certainly has plenty of crime thrillers, detective stories, and serialized police tales, but as far as procedural police dramas go, it's lacking. The Closer, therefore, a 2005 TV show, is a welcome new entry to Netflix's library.
The Closer Seasons 1-7 Will Come To Netflix On December 22

The Closer is a 7-season police procedural that originally aired on TNT beginning in 2005, with the finale coming in 2021. Starring Kyra Sedgwick as LAPD chief, Brenda Leigh Johnson, The Closer follows Brenda as she solves crimes in the LA area. An interrogator, Brenda is adept at getting confessions.
Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Brenda brings an upbeat but capable attitude to a struggling department, and her ability to get even the most tight-lipped criminals to confess to crimes is what earns her her nickname and the title of the series. J.K. Simmons, Corey Reynolds, and Robert Gossett also star.
The series has an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and was notable for how it depicts its female lead, allowing Brenda to revel in her femininity rather than tamp it down to fit in with a masculine environment. Now, the series is available to watch in its entirety on Netflix starting on December 22, 2025.
Major Crimes, The Closer's Spin-Off, Won't Be On Netflix
Sharon Raydor in Major Crimes
If you finish The Closer and find yourself wanting more, which is likely to happen, you'll be glad to know the series spawned a spin-off that begins just after the end of The Closer. Unfortunately, if you want to watch that series on Netflix, you're out of luck because it isn't available on the platform.
The spin-off, Major Crimes, stars Mary McDonnell, reprising her role as Sharon Raydor. With the departure of Brenda, Sharon steps up to run the Major Crimes Division. As a former internal-affairs officer, the other members of the squad are slow to trust her, but she eventually earns their respect.
Major Crimes ran for six seasons and manages to tell a story that feels significantly different, though no less effective, from the one in The Closer, despite both series' similarities. Major Crimes is not currently available to stream, but you can buy it on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
