A Bosch star reveals he's training to become a real-life police officer at the age of 65. The police procedural, which premiered in 2014 and ended earlier this year, stars Titus Welliver as the titular Harry Bosch, a former special forces officer turned detective for the Los Angeles Police Department who investigates various murders and police corruption.
However, former Bosch star Jerry O'Donnell is training to become a real-life police officer for the Asheville Police Department in North Carolina. Talking to the Asheville Watchdog, O'Donnell detailed the intense physical training required and reflected on his desire for public service. Read his full comments below:
When we do PT, we go on these runs in the parking garage — you run up, run down, run the parking garage. And then you do exercises — 15 air squats, run up another level. Do 50 push ups, run up another level. Do 50 burpees.
I always think when you slide into home at the end of your life, you want to be all used up. You know — dirty, scarred up, a little bloody, and spent.
I feel blessed and grateful to still have some ability, so you know, that’s like a sense of purpose — to be of service.
Jerry O'Donnell in Bosch season 5
O'Donnell served four years in the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division before becoming an actor, playing various law enforcement roles in shows like Bosch, Dexter, Mad Men, Seal Team, Without a Trace, N.Y.P.D. Blue, and JAG.
O'Donnell is roughly halfway through his Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET). He will take the state exam in mid-January and, if he passes, will graduate on January 30, and be sworn in sometime in March. Afterward, he must complete an additional month of post-BLET training followed by three phases of field training. Altogether, the process to become a fully qualified APD officer takes about a year.
Department spokesperson Rick Rice says that O'Donnell is "certainly the oldest [APD recruit] in the last 20-30 years," and "probably the oldest ever." Typically, new recruits are in their 20s or early 30s.
However, O'Donnell is seemingly cut from a different cloth. He's played countless law enforcement officers over the decades, but now he's preparing to take on the role in real life, provided he clears every requirement, both written and physical.
