Florida football finally found its next head coach on Sunday with the announcement of former Tulane Green Wave skipper Jon Sumrall, who became the 31st head football coach in program history.
"Jon Sumrall is a proven winner and an exceptional leader who has built successful programs at every stop," athletic director Scott Stricklin said in his introductory press conference.

He will cultivate a daily culture of competitiveness, accountability and winning that drives success on the field and throughout our program.
"Jon fully understands the expectations at the University of Florida, including our expectations to produce championship teams that feature a dynamic offense, and we're excited to welcome him and his family to Gator Nation."
Those are encouraging words from the university's top athletic administrator, but not every member of the Gator Nation feels quite so bullish on the 43-year-old ballcoach, who only has four seasons of experience at HC — two with the Troy Trojans and another pair in New Orleans at Tulane. Will he be a successful successor to Billy Napier? Only time will tell.
As the dust settled from the landmark decision for the Orange and Blue, the Gators Wire staff convened in roundtable fashion to give their respective opinions of Sumrall. Take a look below at what we have to offer.

"Honestly, I am pretty underwhelmed by this hire. Not that I do not think that Sumrall is a good coach, but he does not have any head coaching experience in the SEC and it feels like we are doing Napier v2.0 here.
"To be fair, the former Tulane skipper is being handed a program that is in far better shape than that which "Sun Belt Billy" took on when he arrived in Gainesville. Hopefully, the transfer portal exodus does not reach biblical proportions and Sumrall can get started with a roster that features plenty of top talent.
"At the end of the day, while I never really expected Lane Kiffin to land in the Swamp, I did have my eyes on someone with a bit of a longer resume, like Drinkwitz, but we will have to roll with what we have in 2026 and beyond." — Adam Dubbin

"Part of my hesitation with the Sumrall hire is tied to the reality that this just wasn’t a strong coaching cycle in my opinion. Especially after Kiffin had his eyes set on the LSU job. If Florida had pulled the trigger on Napier last year, the conversation today probably looks a lot different. Maybe they would’ve reeled in Kiffin. Who knows.
"Instead, the Gators waited, and now they’re navigating a thinner pool where every option comes with some kind of question mark. It’s easy to sit here and play the 'what if' game, but hindsight is 20/20.
"Maybe Sumrall ends up being the guy Florida needed all along. Or, maybe the timing boxed them into a corner without the freedom to chase the kind of coach fans really dreamed about. That’s why I’m stuck somewhere between optimistic and uneasy. Don’t get me wrong. The hire makes sense, but the circumstances around it are hard to ignore." — Aidan Gallardo

"In four years, Florida will be happy they went with Sumrall instead of caving to Kiffin and his circus act.
"The desire to hire a big-name coach is understandable given all that transpired in the Billy Napier era, but it’s misguided. Napier wasn’t the disaster his record indicates. He rebuilt the program, established the right kind of culture and got a bit unlucky.
"Let’s be real, if DJ Lagway has an offseason and is healthy all year, Florida beats Kentucky. If 25% of the scholarship roster isn’t injured, maybe a win over Georgia or Ole Miss happens. But it didn’t.

"What Sumrall has that Napier lacked is intensity. Florida never got to see the 'scared money don’t make money' version of Napier. Maybe that was too much to ask for off a viral clip.
"Sumrall is defensive-minded, willing to hand over playcalling duties and a strong type-A personality. Maybe he is Billy 2.0 in some ways, but the outcome will be different." — David Rosenberg
