Train Dreams is officially soaring on the streaming charts. This film originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January of this year before Netflix secured its distribution rights. Starring Joel Edgerton, the film adapts a novella by Denis Johnson about an early 20th century logger named Robert Grainer.

The film is directed by Clint Bentley, who co-adapted the script with Greg Kwedar. Felicity Jones stars opposite Edgerton, with a supporting cast that includes William H. Macy, Paul Schneider, Clifton Collins Jr., and Alfred Hsing. The film dropped on Netflix on November 21.

Now, Train Dreams is officially a hit film on Netflix. The movie came in at no. 5 on the top 10 movies chart in the United States today, November 24. It joins a list that includes other recently added titles, including Champagne Problems, The Carman Family Deaths, Ambulance, and In Your Dreams.

Train Dreams managed to rank above KPop Demon Hunters, Netflix's smash hit animated film that is still getting buzz months later. It also came in above Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Frankenstein, which also hit the platform this month.

Train Dreams has been part of the Oscar conversation since the moment it premiered at Sundance. The film has a strong team behind it, with Bentley and Kwedar coming off of a recent Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for Sing Sing. This recent recognition helps situate Train Dreams in a good place with Academy voters.

At the center of the Oscar conversation, however, is Edgerton. Edgerton has scored a lot of key recognition in the past, including a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Loving, but he has yet to get a coveted Oscar nomination. Reviews of Train Dreams universally lauded his performance, making it a strong candidate for his Oscar first.

Edgerton will not be without significant competition when it comes to a Best Actor nomination. Timothée Chalamet is considered a leading contender to be nominated for Marty Supreme. Other strong Best Actor predictions have included Leonardo DiCaprio for One Battle After Another, Wagner Moura for The Secret Agent, and Michael B. Jordan for Sinners.

Getting strong viewership, however, will help Train Dreams remain a part of the conversation. For the smaller independent films in the mix, name recognition is of particular importance. The movie's trending status on streaming could help stir up talk of Train Dreams at a time that is of the utmost importance in awards season.
