Rupert Grint has reflected on never escaping Harry Potter nor his role as Ron Weasley in the movies ahead of HBO's upcoming TV series remake. Grint was a key Harry Potter cast member, portraying Ron across all eight movies. Much like his fellow actors, the role became a defining one for his career, which has continued since the series' end.
Now, Variety reports that, while speaking with the BBC, Grint explained how he reached out to Alastair Stout, who will be playing Ron in HBO's Harry Potter remake, "wishing him all the best" in the role. He also spoke about what it was like to live in "Ron Weasley's shadow," saying he's proud of having brought the character to life:
I wrote [Stout] a letter before they started, passing the baton as it were. It was really just wishing him all the best with it. I had so much fun stepping into this world, and I hope he has the same experience… It’s quite strange to have the cycle happening again. I’m really intrigued what it’s going to be like. I think it’s great that it’s a whole new thing. It’s going to be its own thing, and I think that will be fun.
I'll never never step out of Ron Weasley’s shadow. I’m fine with that. I think it’s great. I love meeting people who really felt this was part of their childhood… It has a quite deep meaning to a lot of people of my generation, and even more to generations who are finding it now. It’s great. It gives me a lot of pride. It was such a huge thing. I don’t think I’ll ever quite step out of his shadow, but I’m fine with that.
Grint's role as Ron makes him a generation-defining actor, as he's been the face associated with Harry's best friend since the Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone movie was released in 2001. The talent he brought onscreen was essential to his character arc, from his growing bravery over the years to his romance with Hermione (Emma Watson).

Grint's statement emphasizes his support for HBO's upcoming Harry Potter TV show, while also showcasing how much he appreciates the opportunity he was given. That same opportunity will now pass down to Stout, whose role in the series will last ten years based on HBO's current filming plan. It's also another defining aspect for the series' next generation.
Since his work on Harry Potter, Grint has had other roles. His latest TV role was Walter Gilman in an episode of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, "Dreams in the Witch House." In movies, he portrayed Redmond in the cast of Knock at the Cabin, directed by M. Night Shyamalan, and has an upcoming role as Jon in Nightborn.
However, as Grint states, he'll always be most well-remembered for his role as Ron, something he's clearly happy about considering the mark he left on pop culture and cinema history. Although he's finished his time in the role, his support of Stout brings his time as Ron full circle while still emphasizing it as a defining aspect of his career.
Although the show will be ushering in a new age for Harry Potter as a whole, it's true that Grint will continue to have an important place for many as Ron. His own feelings about the role showcase that, for the rest of his career, the Wizarding World will be important to him, and to millions of others who grew up with his character.
HBO's Harry Potter remake is expected to begin in 2027.
