Earlier this month, film fans were treated to the hotly anticipated release of the trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, the film aims to capitalize on the huge success of its 2023 predecessor by expanding the star-studded cast with the introduction of Brie Larson as the iconic Rosalina, who joins returning stars such as Anya Taylor-Joy and Jack Black. Scheduled for release in April 2026, the countdown to the sequel is well and truly on.

In the meantime, it seems fans are recalling the colorful chaos that came before as The Super Mario Bros. Movie becomes a streaming hit once again. At the time of writing, the movie is one of the 10 most-streamed titles on Prime Video in the U.S., a feat it regularly achieves. However, its streaming success doesn't come close to the incredible heights of its box office run, with The Super Mario Bros. Movie earning over $1.3 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time in the process. Not only that, but the film had the highest-grossing opening weekend worldwide for any animated movie. A synopsis for the film reads:

"Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi are warped to the magical Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario must team up with Princess Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong to save Luigi from the evil Bowser."

Not Everyone Loved 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie'

Sure, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a phenomenal financial success and even earned plenty of praise from a die-hard franchise fanbase. However, the film proved more divisive with critics, only earning a mixed 59% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus reading, "While it's nowhere near as thrilling as turtle tipping your way to 128 lives, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a colorful -- albeit thinly plotted -- animated adventure that has about as many Nintendos as Nintendon'ts." Collider's Ross Bonaime wrote in his review:

"The Super Mario Bros. Movie captures the spirit of the games, the deep history, and the incredible possibilities that these games have presented for decades, all in one of the most fun animated films in years, with a team behind it that you can feel loves these characters and this world."

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is streaming now on Prime Video. Make sure to stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.
