Get ready, fellow cyberpunk fans, Apple TV’s upcoming sci-fi TV show based on a bestselling book is just one reason 2026 will be a fantastic year for the genre. The cyberpunk subgenre has come and gone from the pop culture zeitgeist over the decades, but its popularity has been building pretty consistently since the 2020 release of Cyberpunk 2077.
Though the video game was rocky at first, it gained popularity over time and eventually became one of the best-selling games of all time. Since then, we’ve gotten more onscreen cyberpunk adaptations, mostly within anime and movies. What’s more, past cyberpunk masterpieces that sci-fi fans always loved got the critical and mainstream appreciation they always deserved.
Luckily, TV is finally getting more of the futuristic “high-tech, low-life” treatment. The momentum will come to a head in 2026, with multiple cyberpunk projects on the horizon – the most exciting of which is Apple TV’s Neuromancer TV show.
Apple TV's Highly-Anticipated Neuromancer Show Will Make 2026 The Year Of Cyberpunk
Neuromancer Book Cover
While cyberpunk technically existed before them, the Neuromancer book and the Blade Runner movie are widely considered the genre's creators. They might not be the first, but they shaped and popularized cyberpunk. As such, it’s surprising that Neuromancer hasn’t come to the screen in the past 41 years. Luckily, that will change in 2026.
Apple TV’s Neuromancer show is expected to release next year, and it’s already a significant topic of discussion among sci-fi fans. Although nerves are present, the general feeling is excitement, and that’s only going to grow as we get closer to the release date.
Author William Gibson has been involved in the production of the Neuromancer TV show.
As it is, the very brief teaser already looks incredible, showing the Chatsubo bar in all its gritty, neon-noir glory. The visuals capture the “low-life” part of cyberpunk, so it’s just a matter of whether they get the “high-tech” part right. If everything goes right, Neuromancer could be the best cyberpunk show of 2026.
More Exciting Cyberpunk TV Shows & Games Are Coming Out In 2026
While it has gained the most attention, Neuromancer isn’t the only reason 2026 will be the year of Cyberpunk TV. Three more exciting TV shows are expected to come out next year. The Prime Video TV show Blade Runner 2099 will continue the other seminal cyberpunk franchise.
Meanwhile, on the anime side, fans can look forward to the newest adaptation of The Ghost in the Shell and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which are expected in early and late 2026, respectively. The Ghost in the Shell is one of the most exciting upcoming animated TV shows based on a book, as it’s said to be extremely faithful to the source material.
Plus, looking outside of TV, the Cyberpunk Legends card game is slated for publication next year. The highly anticipated cyberpunk 2.5D action-platformer game Replaced is expected to come out in Spring 2026 after a four-year wait.
Unfortunately, none of the projects has a definitive release date yet, so there’s still room for release time frames to change. However, if everything goes as expected, 2026 will be a damn good year to be a cyberpunk fan.
