It's not often that Halo 3 fans get a win these days. The Halo franchise is spinning wheels in general, and most of its recent successes have very little to do with its Xbox 360 era. When Microsoft fails to provide, however, fans tend to step in, which is exactly what's happened with Counter-Strike 2's Project Misriah.
Released on November 16, Project Misriah ports a bundle of Halo 3 maps and assets into Counter-Strike 2, making it possible to play an approximation of Master Chief's third outing within Valve's hit FPS. In addition to the ported content, the mod's Spartan mode features gameplay adjustments to replicate the feeling of Halo 3, backing off from Counter-Strike's quick deaths with regenerating health and slower TTK. The ODST mode, meanwhile, adds Halo weapons but leaves the CS experience largely intact.
Halo 3 And Counter-Strike Collide
Two Very Different FPS Games
Master Chief from the Halo games
Halo 3 and Counter-Strike aren't the most predictable pair, as the two franchises are about as far apart in style as FPS games can be. Counter-Strike does have a history of extensive modding, though, so it might stand to reason that a Halo project of this magnitude would eventually be attempted.
The Steam listing notes some limitations to the mods, pointing to gun recoil as the biggest issue. While the team has no clear way to fix this, other changes are still planned for the future. The brief roadmap teases projectile weapons like the Needler and more map additions, accompanied by a polite request for help with scripting.
Halo 3 Multiplayer Remains Unrivaled
There's Still Nothing Like It
Nearly two decades after its release, it's hard to find anything that scratches the same itch as Halo 3 multiplayer. Halo Infinite multiplayer has slowly achieved greatness over the course of its updates (particularly via the revelatory Husky Raid), but it very much has to be taken in its own right.
The most accurate way to play Halo 3 multiplayer today is through the Master Chief Collection, which goes on steep sales frequently enough to easily justify the investment. All the same, Counter-Strike 2 is free, and there's still a big difference between cheap and free. Project Misriah could also be a good gateway for Counter-Strike fans who haven't yet played Halo, a denomination that I once belonged to.
At any rate, as a Steam Workshop mod, you won't need any technical know-how to get Project Misriah up and running. If you have Counter-Strike 2 installed and the Halo 3 spin sounds appealing, there's nothing to lose here.
