Luca Guadagnino's After the Hunt has had a resurgence on streaming, following its negative reviews and box office failure. After the Hunt debuted with a "rotten" Rotten Tomatoes score following its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, and things did not improve from there. It grossed less than $6 million worldwide upon its theatrical release.

Starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield, and Ayo Edebiri, After the Hunt follows a Yale philosophy professor (Roberts) on the verge of tenure when her favorite student (Edebiri) accuses a colleague (Garfield) of sexually assaulting her. The movie explores how different generations react to this, with an ambiguous ending that didn't entirely satisfy audiences or critics.

However, despite its lack of popularity in theaters, After the Hunt is now the No. 1 movie in the world on Amazon Prime Video, per FlixPatrol. An Amazon MGM Studios movie, After the Hunt became available on Prime Video on November 20. It is currently ahead of popular titles including Playdate, Red One, Our Fault, A Working Man, and Tyler Perry's Finding Joy.

After the Hunt is perhaps worth seeing because of the brilliant cast, and in order to form one's own opinion on the divisive plot. While any hopes Amazon might have had for the movie to join the 2026 Oscar nominees list have been dashed, there is at least still interest in it. However, though people are watching it, it still holds a 38% Popcornmeter against its 37% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes.

Director Guadagnino was coming off an interesting 2024, which saw the release of Challengers and Queer, neither of which were huge awards contenders. In particular, many consider Challengers to have been snubbed. Having not been nominated for an Oscar since 2018's Call Me by Your Name, After the Hunt failed to be his comeback, and was relegated to streaming success only.

Guadagnino has several upcoming projects, the biggest of which is his ApenAI docudrama Artificial, which has been assembling an impressive cast, including Garfield returning to collaborate with the director again, as well as Monica Barbaro, Billie Lourd, Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Rylance, and more. Ike Barinholtz is also rumored to be playing Elon Musk in the film.

After the Hunt, written by Nora Garrett and also starring Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny, is an interesting movie to talk about, even if it is ultimately disappointing. Julia Roberts' highly anticipated return to the big screen at least resulted in another strong performance from her, and Guadagnino's entry still generates enough intrigue to at last find its audience on streaming.
