Around a decade after Zack Snyder's 300 catapulted him to mainstream stardom — and after an extended stint as a romantic comedy lead — Gerard Butler returned to the swords-and-sandals genre with the film Gods of Egypt. But his grand return couldn't have gone more disappointingly. The movie was panned by critics and rejected by audiences, earning backlash for the perceived whitewashing of its cast. Following the film's failure, director Alex Proyas famously described critics as "diseased vultures," and his own movie as "a dying carcass." Gods of Egypt remains an object of curiosity even a decade later, and continues to attract inquisitive audiences to experience its visual effects-enhanced fantasy world. But time is running out; if you haven't watched the film yet, you have only until December 7 to do so, because that's when it is leaving Netflix.

Released in 2016, Gods of Egypt was a quest movie that followed the adventures of Horus, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and a common thief played by Brenton Thwaites. The film's cast also included Chadwick Boseman, who'd go on to make his debut as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War not long afterward. Produced on a reported budget of $140 million, Gods of Egypt grossed only around $30 million domestically and around $150 million worldwide, supposedly losing as much as $90 million. Of course, the intricacies of its financial breakdown aren't public knowledge, but the production received major tax benefits for shooting in Australia.

Alex Proyas Ranted About the State of Film Criticism

Director Proyas is from Australia. He hasn't had a feature film release since Gods of Egypt's failure, which marked a massive low in his otherwise solid career. Proyas broke out with the science-fiction gem Dark City, and went on to make the ill-fated comic book adaptation The Crow, the Will Smith-led I, Robot, and the Nicolas Cage cult hit Knowing. Gods of Egypt was critically panned upon release, and its 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes compelled Proyas to lash out at critics in a Facebook post. He wrote:

"Now we have a pack of diseased vultures pecking at the bones of a dying carcass. Trying to peck to the rhythm of the consensus. I applaud any film-goer who values their own opinion enough to not base it on what the pack-mentality says is good or bad."
