Rumors from credible sources suggest that the release of the next version of One UI, dubbed One UI 8.5, is around the corner. To be more specific, One UI 8.5 is expected to be available as a public beta in a couple of weeks. This surely sparks excitement among One UI users and Samsung fans, especially since One UI 8.5 is said to be a bigger update than One UI 8 in terms of new features.
Based on the leaks that have emerged so far, the One UI 8.5's feature list includes some big-ticket items, including a major overhaul to the Gallery app, a customizable Quick Settings panel, and more. In addition to those, Samsung also seems to be focusing on a dark mode issue we almost forgot existed, according to the latest One UI 8.5 rumor.

The rumor comes from a well-known One UI community moderator @GalaxyTechie, who shared on their X timeline a small video showcasing a new dark mode feature in the upcoming One UI 8.5 update. The 36-second video shows how apps change their background to black when the system theme is changed to "Dark."
However, the change doesn't appear across all apps at this moment, which is understandable given the fact that the feature is in an early stage of development. The leak also suggests that icons in One UI 8.5 feature 3D shadows in both "Light" and "Dark" modes. This adds more depth to the dark mode icons, making them more visually appealing.
This has been a long-standing issue with the implementation of the dark mode in One UI. Users on Reddit have been asking Samsung to bring support for dark mode icons for years, and the demand has grown louder since Apple introduced the feature in iOS 18. You can somewhat fix this on your Galaxy phone with the Theme Park module in Good Lock, but it isn't nearly as perfect as the one shown in the video in terms of ease of use.
While it appears that Samsung is finally acting on that feedback, don't be too excited, as the company may also scrap the idea and not release the feature in the One UI 8.5 update. The leak doesn't say anything about whether these dark mode changes in app icons will also impact third-party apps.
We'll know more about Samsung's plan for dark mode app icons when Samsung officially releases One UI 8.5 beta.
