Netflix's newest number one movie record establishes that a long-held film trend for the streaming platform has continued on for yet another year. While the world of media and streaming is eternally changing, some trends still tend to repeat themselves for several years in a row at minimum.
One Netflix trend has now established itself as part of 2025 thanks to the streaming platform's latest numbers, allowing a notable seasonal tendency to continue onward. That said, it's also interesting to note that this is one Netflix trend that many were no doubt expecting to happen at some point towards the end of the year.
Netflix's Newest Most-Watched Movie Of The Week Confirms A Years-Old Trend Lives On

A week after Guillermo del Toro's Frankstein held the top spot in Netflix's weekly movie viewing numbers, the spooky spectacle of the film gave way to something very different: namely, Champagne Problems, a romance movie set in the holiday period and focused on some star-crossed lovers.
Champagne Problems hitting the top of Netflix's weekly viewing numbers in November 17–23 sees 2025 continue a now years-long tradition for the streaming platform: namely, the tradition of Christmas romance movies reaching the very top of the charts as December begins to come around.
In 2024, November 18–24 saw similar results, with the top of its own weekly Netflix movie charts being held first and foremost by The Merry Gentlemen, just beating out the famous Hot Frosty, which focuses around a woman falling in love with a snowman who's been brought to life.
2023's Christmas romance record came slightly later than these previous examples thanks to the success of Leo, but December 2–8 brought another similar movie to this top spot in the form of Our Little Secret - and 2022 had The Noel Diary and Falling For Christmas fulfill this role in its own lineup.
Netflix's Christmas Movie Trend Is Likely To Continue

Netflix's history isn't entirely beholden to Christmas romance movies in this period - as in 2021, while many films that come under this umbrella made it to Netflix's top 10 weekly watchlist, the number one spot was instead taken by the likes of Red Notice and Don't Look Up during this time.
However, a four-year-long track record for this genre of film certainly isn't a small one, and the fact 2021 saw more than one Christmas romcom come decidedly close to this milestone suggests the coming years will see similar movies repeat this Netflix record down the line.
This makes a lot of sense, both because this period of the year is one wherein it's common for viewers to seek out seasonal entertainment, and because romances tend to be the predominant genre Christmas-themed films fall under. That said, seeing how the next few weeks further prove or reject this concept - and what the next years hold in terms of it - should prove interesting, since it's clear this trend could be challenged depending on what Netflix's next lineups hold.
