The Eagles need a solid punt returner with Xavier Gipson nursing an injury, and it just so happens that one of the NFL's best in 2023 is currently on Philadelphia's practice squad.

John Metchie is in New York catching touchdowns with the Jets, meaning the No. 18 was available. Britain Covey is on the practice squad but has enough respect in the building to have his old number returned. Covey could also be preparing to return to the lineup with Gipson injured, and Philadelphia in need of explosive plays and competent return game play.

Philadelphia brought back a Covey this past summer, signing him to the practice squad ahead of Week 1 vs. the Dallas Cowboys.

Last season, Covey suffered a neck injury in Week 13, which was significant enough for the Eagles to place him on injured reserve.

Covey returned to practice before the Super Bowl but wasn't activated from IR in time to contribute to the blowout win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Jimmy Kempski of The Philly Voice reported that Covey became an unrestricted free agent after the Eagles decided not to tender the wide receiver and return man.

In addition to his efforts as a punt returner, the 27-year-old logged seven catches for 34 yards on eight targets across his five regular-season appearances.
