Actor Macaulay Culkin has revealed that he has ideas for a new Home Alone sequel.

Culkin played a young Kevin McCallister in the film, a child who is forced to battle off intruders after being left alone without parental supervision over the holidays.

Culkin was one of the biggest box office stars of the ‘90s as a child actor, before leaving the limelight in his early teens. In recent years, he has embraced the nostalgia surrounding Home Alone, appearing in Google ads paying homage to his role in the beloved Christmas film.

Now, during the latest of his A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin series, the actor said that he “wouldn’t be completely allergic” to returning to his role as Kevin McCallister in a Home Alone sequel.

He added, however, that “it would have to be just right” before pitching an idea for a sequel.

“I kind of had this idea,” Culkin said (as per Variety). “I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [Kevin’s son] won’t let me in…and he’s the one setting traps for me.”

He went on to say that “the house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship” and that his character has to “get let back into son’s heart”. He added: “That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have. I’m not completely allergic to it, the right thing.”

Home Alone was the second highest-grossing film of 1990, earning $476million (£359million) worldwide. Culkin returned for the sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost In New York in 1992.

The director behind the first two Home Alone films, Chris Columbus, has previously shot down rumours of a reboot, saying that he thinks the whole thing would be a “mistake”.

“I think Home Alone really exists as, not at this timepiece, but it was this very special moment, and you can’t really recapture that,”  Columbus said in an interview last summer with Entertainment Tonight. “I think it’s a mistake to try to go back and recapture something we did 35 years ago. I think it should be left alone.”

Meanwhile, in recent news, Culkin revealed he has changed his legal name, honouring a Twitter/X poll he conducted in 2018.

The star is known for his witty posts on social media, and in 2018, he ran a poll where fans could decide his new middle name. The eventual winner was “Macaulay Culkin”, and the actor revealed he did indeed make that name official.

“My name is Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin,” he said during a Q&A session at A Nostalgic Night With Macaulay Culkin last Saturday (November 22), at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in California.

During the event, which was reported by People, he reminded the audience of the other options, which included “The McRib Is Back” and “Kieran”, a nod to his Succession-starring brother.

Regarding the eventual winner, he explained: “The final vote was ‘Macaulay Culkin’, so my name is Macaulay Macaulay Culkin Culkin. If somebody comes up to me at the airport and says, ‘Excuse me, are you Macaulay Culkin?’ I can say, ‘Well, Macaulay Culkin is my middle name.’” He concluded: “I did it all for that one joke.”
