He wasn't the lead in the Coen brothers' True Grit, but he played a pivotal role in the movie, which emerged as a critical and commercial hit 15 years ago. True Grit was headlined by Jeff Bridges, but it was effectively a vehicle for the debutante Hailee Steinfeld, who earned an Academy Award nomination for her star-making performance as the vengeful teen Mattie Ross. True Grit remains endlessly re-watchable, and fans of Westerns might want to make a mental note to check it out again when it debuts on the Paramount+ streaming service on December 1.
Released in 2010, True Grit was marketed as an adaptation of Charles Portis' source novel, rather than a remake of the John Wayne movie from 1969. The movie followed Mattie's quest to bring her father's killer to justice, accompanied by an aging lawman named Rooster Cogburn, and a Texas Ranger named LaBeouf, played by Damon. The movie also featured Josh Brolin as the killer on the run, and Barry Pepper as the leader of a gang of outlaws. True Grit was produced on a reported budget of around $35 million, but it ended up grossing over $250 million at the box office. It also earned unanimous praise for the Coens' writing, Steinfeld's performance, and for helping revive the Western genre. It now holds a "certified fresh" 95% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Girded by strong performances from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, and lifted by some of the Coens' most finely tuned, unaffected work, True Grit is a worthy companion to the Charles Portis book."
The Coen Brothers Go Solo Soon After 'True Grit'
Unfortunately, after True Grit, the Coens only directed three more movies together — Inside Llewyn Davis, Hail Caesar!, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs — before splitting up. Since then, Joel Coen has directed the acclaimed Apple Original The Tragedy of Macbeth, while Ethan Coen has directed two films in a planned trilogy — Drive Away Dolls and Honey Don't!. Joel is now putting together a Gothic mystery starring Josh O'Connor as his next project.
You can watch True Grit on Paramount+ starting December 1, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
