Give me a lighthearted recap
The greatest action movie of the last 10 years and one of the best of all time is coming back to theaters soon, but there’s a catch. While some might say it’s recency bias, it’s hard to argue against the point that Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, One Battle After Another, is one of the best action movies ever made. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the film earned widespread critical acclaim and is viewed as a heavy favorite for multiple Academy Awards at the 2026 Oscars. Its theatrical run has mostly come to a close, but IMAX recently announced that it will return to theaters on December 12 for special Christmas screenings in 70mm.
Warner Bros. took One Battle After Another into over 3,500 theaters upon its release at the end of September, but this has since dwindled to less than 200 in the two months since its premiere. The film opened with $22 million at the domestic box office against a $130 million budget. It has since collected $70 million domestically and $131 million internationally to help its global total eclipse $200 million. The film may be a financial loss for Warner Bros. right now, but it’s certainly headed towards gold at the 2026 Academy Awards. It also stars Benicio del Toro, Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, and Regina Hall.
Leonardo DiCaprio is a six-time Oscar nominee and even a winner for his performance in The Revenant 10 years ago, and he’s likely going to earn another nod for his role in One Battle After Another. Writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson is also expected to have the type of year Sean Baker did last year with Anora, earning nominations for his writing and directing of One Battle After Another, which is also likely in line for a Best Picture nod.
When Does Leonardo DiCaprio’s Next Movie Come Out?
Leonardo DiCaprio has several projects in the works, but none of them have official release dates at the time of writing. He’s reportedly in line to star opposite Christian Bale, Adam Driver, Austin Butler, and Bradley Cooper in Heat 2, which is expected to begin production soon. He’s also been tapped to star alongside Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in Martin Scorsese’s next movie, a Hawaii-set crime drama. Johnson recently shifted his career focus after an Oscars-worthy performance in The Smashing Machine, and he looks to further step things up by teaming with the most prolific writer/director duo in Hollywood.
