Give me a lighthearted recap
Wicked: For Good is nearing its second weekend at the global box office, but it’s already poised to be one of the most successful movies of the year. The film opened with over $150 million domestically and $200 million globally, and it also added another $14 million on its first Monday earlier this week. At the time of writing, Wicked: For Good’s domestic box office total is $161 million, and its international total is $76 million, totaling $237 million globally. This $161 million at the domestic box office is enough to push the new Wicked movie past Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of the Grindelwald, which wrapped up its theatrical run with only $159 million in America.
In the coming days, Wicked: For Good is in line to overtake several other fantasy epics, including Clash of the Titans (starring Liam Neeson) and How to Train Your Dragon 2 (starring Gerard Butler). With $161 million already under its belt in less than a week, it will likely have no trouble pushing past $200 million during its second weekend in theaters and beyond. It needs $505 million domestically if it’s going to become the highest-grossing fantasy movie of all time, though, a milestone which its predecessor fell just short of.
The first Wicked movie, which was released just a year ago, grossed $474 million at the domestic box office and $281 million internationally for a global total of $756 million. It was one of the highest-grossing movies of 2024 globally, and it fell short of only Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine at the 2024 domestic box office. Wicked: For Good is on pace to pass its predecessor after a bigger opening weekend, but it will have to continue this momentum with good word-of-mouth reviews.
How Long Is the New ‘Wicked’ Movie?
The new Wicked movie has a runtime of two hours and 17 minutes, which is significantly shorter than the two hours and 40 minutes of the first film. Wicked: For Good is not yet available to watch on streaming and is only playing in theaters, and considering the film’s massive box office returns, it likely isn’t leaving theaters anytime soon. However, similar to the first Wicked, there is no post-credits scene at the end of Wicked: For Good, so viewers can leave the theater as soon as the movie is over without missing anything.
Stay tuned to Collider for more box office updates and coverage of Wicked: For Good.
