The actor died at his home in Mumbai after a brief illness, Indian broadcaster NDTV reported on Monday. The country's IANS news agency published footage of an ambulance leaving Dharmendra's residence.
The actor was just two weeks shy of his 90th birthday.
Dharmendra was known as the “He-Man of Bollywood," starting his career on the screen in the 1960s before taking on a vast array of roles, from comedy characters to action stars and romantic leads.
India's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, said on Monday Dharmendra was a "a phenomenal actor who brought charm and depth to every role he played" and that his death marked "the end of an era in Indian cinema."
"In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, friends and innumerable fans," Modi added.
Indian filmmaker and producer, Karan Johar, described Dharmendra as "the embodiment of a HERO in mainstream cinema" with an "enigmatic screen presence."
"Today there is a gaping hole in our industry," Johar said in a post to social media. "He is and will always be a bonafide Legend of Indian Cinema."
