Based on James Clavell's 1975 novel, Shogun is a bilingual historical drama series (in English and Japanese) created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks. Set in 17th-century Japan, the show is essentially a fictionalized take on the rise of the historical Tokugawa shogunate, following the stories of a warlord, a noblewoman, and an English sailor, whose actions change the course of history. Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, and Anna Sawai star as the lead characters, with Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, Fumi Nikaido, and more in key supporting roles.
A compelling drama with impeccable production values, Shogun premiered in 2024 to near-universal acclaim, becoming one of the most celebrated shows of the year. An incredible story of war and political intrigue presented through striking visuals, the series has been praised for its amazing performances, writing, and cinematography. The show earned numerous accolades, becoming the first Japanese-language show to win a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series, and though it was originally conceived as a miniseries, the show has been renewed for two more seasons.
5 ‘Only Murders in the Building’ (2021–Present)

Created by Steve Martin and John Hoffman, Only Murders in the Building is a mystery comedy-drama series starring Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three strangers who all live in New York’s historic Arconia building. United by a shared love of true-crime podcasts, this oddball trio goes on a series of madcap adventures as they set out to produce a podcast of their own, investigating a succession of suspicious murders in their building. Amy Ryan, Michael Cyril Creighton, Meryl Streep, Tina Fey, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Nathan Lane, and more star in supporting and recurring roles.
One of the most popular mystery shows of recent years, Only Murders in the Building premiered to universal acclaim in 2021 and has delivered consistently engaging storylines for five successful seasons so far, with a sixth currently in the pipeline. Emotionally rich and laugh-out-loud hilarious, the show has been praised for its intriguing mysteries, quirky comedy, and the stellar performances of its powerhouse cast. The show has earned several awards and nominations over the years as well, including seven Emmy Awards out of 49 nominations.
4 ‘Attack on Titan’ (2013–2023)
Eren in his Titan form is about to throw a punch in Attack on Titan. Season 1 Episode 7, Small Blade - The Battle For Trost
Image Via CrunchyrollProduced by Wit Studio (Seasons 1–3) and MAPPA (Season 4), Attack on Titan is a post-apocalyptic dark fantasy anime adapted from Hajime Isayama’s manga series. The show primarily follows the story of Eren Yeager, a young boy in a world where the remnants of humanity live behind walls that protect them from giant monsters called Titans. After his mother is eaten by a Titan, Eren becomes determined to fight against the monsters, but when he gains the uncanny ability to transform into a Titan himself, it puts him on a dangerous path that reveals the true hidden history of the world. Yuki Kaji, Yui Ishikawa, Marina Inoue, and more star as the Japanese voice cast, with Bryce Papenbrook, Trina Nishimura, Jessie James Grelle, and others voicing the English dub.
One of the most popular anime series of all time, Attack on Titan is a complex fantasy show that begins with a simple action-drama premise and develops over time into an increasingly dark and mature tragedy. Universally acclaimed for its gritty storytelling, mindblowing animation, and complex, morally ambiguous characters, the series is a gripping watch that uses its fantasy setting to explore extremely real themes of war, trauma, and the endless cycle of violence that underpins all of human history. In short, it's one of the greatest anime shows of all time and a true landmark in the development of the field.
3 ‘The Great’ (2020–2023)
Elle Fanning in The Great Season 3Image via Hulu
An absurdist dark comedy that satirizes the life of Russian Empress Catherine the Great, The Great was created by Tony McNamara and is adapted from his 2008 play. Elle Fanning stars as Catherine, and the series explores her tumultuous relationship with her husband, Emperor Peter III (Nicholas Hoult), and her plan to kill him and ascend to the throne. The series also features Phoebe Fox, Sacha Dhawan, Charity Wakefield, Gwilym Lee, Adam Godley, and more in supporting roles.
While most period shows aim to be as historically accurate as they can, The Great shoots for the opposite, delivering endless comedy with its barely-true but decidedly entertaining take on history. The show has been positively received by critics and fans throughout its three-season run, earning special praise for Fanning and Hoult’s leading performances. Gorgeously produced and wickedly funny, the series has earned several accolades, including seven nominations for Primetime Emmy Awards.
2 ‘Interior Chinatown’ (2024)

Created by Charles Yu, Interior Chinatown is an action meta-comedy adapted from his 2020 novel. Jimmy O. Yang stars as Willis Wu, a waiter at a Chinese restaurant who feels like he’s always in the background of life, which is literally true because, unbeknownst to him, he’s a background character in a police procedural show. A chance meeting with detective Lana Lee (Chloe Bennet) sends Willis’s life in a new direction, as he assumes various new roles and slowly works his way up the ladder while investigating his brother’s mysterious disappearance. The show also features Ronny Chieng, Sullivan Jones, Lisa Gilroy, Archie Kao, Diana Lin, and Tzi Ma in key roles.
One of the most inventive shows made in recent years, Interior Chinatown is a gripping work of metafiction that brilliantly satirizes Asian-American stereotypes through the lens of television. Sharply written and amazingly performed with spectacular cinematography and lightwork that plays a significant part in the storytelling, it’s a series unlike any other you’ve seen before. Though it debuted in Hulu’s Top 15, the show hasn’t quite received the attention it deserves, but this underrated experimental series is a truly unique masterpiece.
1 ‘Rick and Morty’ (2013–Present)

An adult animated sci-fi sitcom, Rick and Morty follows the various misadventures of mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his well-intentioned grandson Morty Smith. Created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon, the show takes Rick, Morty, and their family and friends on wild trips across the universe (and multiverse) while also dealing with their highly dysfunctional relationships. Roiland voiced Rick and Morty until Season 7, when he was removed from the show following domestic abuse allegations and replaced by Ian Cardoni (Rick) and Harry Belden (Morty). The ensemble voice cast also includes Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke.
Critically acclaimed and massively popular, Rick and Morty is arguably one of the greatest animated shows of all time, with a unique and original mix of parody, satire, and surprising emotional depths. The series has had eight acclaimed seasons so far and earned numerous accolades, including two Emmys and two Annie Awards. Not bad for a show that started as a little-known Back to the Future parody.
