Far Cry has become one of the most well-known gaming franchises of the 21st century, and with a TV adaptation officially in the works, the Ubisoft IP may finally redeem its disappointing 2008 movie. After the overwhelming success of Far Cry 3, Ubisoft has gone all-in on making Far Cry one of its biggest titles.
Alongside releasing several mainline games and spinoffs, the studio has collaborated with FX to create a Far Cry anthology series with Noah Hawley and Rob Mac leading the project. It's unclear when this show will arrive, but with gaming adaptations seeing massive progression throughout the 2020s, there is a lot of potential for this concept to shine.
Given that the Far Cry series is among Ubisoft's best games of all time, there are a lot of great characters and settings to work with, and the show also has the chance to introduce completely fresh storylines. As a result, most signs point towards the FX production being a major hit, which can finally make up for the franchise's forgotten adaptation.
FX's New Far Cry TV Show Could Redeem The Underwhelming 2008 Movie

Although 2025 has been a slight setback for video game adaptations, it's fair to say the past few years have been the golden age when it comes to these types of movies and TV shows. More often than not, these new projects display an understanding of the source material, leading to fresh new narratives and faithful retellings of popular stories.
In turn, FX's Far Cry series can hopefully fall into this bubble, especially with the anthology format offering the creators plenty of freedom. Not only will this give fans something to look forward to, but it's a great opportunity to redeem the 2008 movie that failed to do this gaming series justice, as evidenced by its poor scores.
Alongside co-creating the show, Rob Mac is also set to star in FX's Far Cry.
The film loosely adapted the source material and didn't really capture this vibrant fictional universe in any meaningful way, receiving a 3.2 IMDb rating and a 12% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In contrast, the anthology show can follow a different game each season and adapt specific elements over time, rather than trying to cram everything into a single season.
Even if it doesn't adapt a specific story directly from the games, there is still a chance to visit familiar locations and have cameos from fan favorite characters, which is more than the movie managed to achieve. Therefore, this future release could easily become the ultimate Far Cry adaptation and help people completely forget about the previous misfire.
Why FX’s Upcoming Show Should Be Way Better Than The Forgotten Far Cry Movie
There is no guarantee that FX's Far Cry series will succeed, but it certainly has a lot of potential to improve upon the disappointing movie adaptation. First and foremost, the show is being made at a time when creators understand video games better, resulting in much better products than what was being pumped out in the 90s and early 2000s.
In addition, the Far Cry movie was released before the franchise had really surged in popularity, as 2012 is when it really got put on the map, meaning the feature film simply came across as a generic action flick set on an island. Fortunately, the upcoming series will have a lot more in-depth stories to draw inspiration from.
The anthology concept means the thrills and spectacles can be freshened up every season, as new characters will allow for different conflicts that each feels distinct in its own way. So long as this exciting production can match the intensity of the games, it should comfortably surpass the forgotten movie, which its creators can help achieve.
With Alien: Earth becoming one of the biggest sci-fi masterpieces of 2025, it's clear the franchise is in good hands, and Rob Mac should add some chaotic ideas that fit this fictional universe to a tee, meaning it would take some drastic mistakes for FX's Far Cry show to perform anywhere near as badly as the first adaptation.
Far Cry’s Anthology Series Does Still Pose One Major Concern

Despite how promising the Far Cry show sounds, there is still one major concern that could restrict its chances of succeeding. After Far Cry 3, the franchise hit new highs and followed the game up with a worthy sequel, indicating that the sky was the limit. However, since then, Ubisoft's hit IP has faced difficulties and has suffered a notable decline.
By no means have people become uninterested in Far Cry altogether, but it simply isn't as popular as it once was. Therefore, an anthology series feels like a big risk since it appeals predominantly to established fans, and marketing a constantly revolving cast and story to newcomers will be difficult, meaning the project relies on loyal players showing up.
Without their support and positive word of mouth, it's not unreasonable to assume FX's investment could fall a little flat, even if the quality is good. Far Cry 7's delay also means there may not be a new game to boost the franchise's reputation ahead of this show, depending on how long production actually takes.
With this in mind, I'm still cautiously optimistic about what this new Far Cry series could look like and its chances of triumphing, but unless some big names get attached to the project or it has a promotional masterclass, the show's fate could rest in the hands of gamers giving it a chance; otherwise, it may struggle.
