The cast of Everybody Loves Raymond opened up about their co-star Sawyer Sweeten's tragic death during the recent 30th anniversary reunion special. Sweeten played Geoffrey, one of Raymond and Debra's children. His siblings, twin Sullivan Sweeten and sister Madylin Sweeten, also starred on the sitcom as Michael and Ally, respectively, in a life-imitates-art casting decision.
Sawyer died by suicide in 2015 at only 19 years old, which the Everybody Loves Raymond cast, including Sullivan and Madylin, addressed during the Everybody Loves Raymond: 30th Anniversary Reunion special on CBS.
While revealing their favorite memories from the nine seasons they shared on Everybody Loves Raymond, star Ray Romano asked if it was fine to talk about Sawyer, and Madylin replied with a simple, "Yes." The actor said that the entire cast misses their co-star, who was a "bright energy" on the set.
Sawyer, of course, is no longer with us, and we miss him, and he…was just this bright energy, light.
Sullivan admitted that no one expected Sawyer's life to end in such a tragic manner, but he has chosen to "think about the good moments," and a lot of those happy memories took place on the set of Everybody Loves Raymond.
None of us really expected what happened, but you know, I try to think about the good moments, and oftentimes, that’s here on this set.
Before wrapping up their conversation about Sawyer, the cast made sure to talk about suicide prevention, which the Sweeten family is "very passionate" about now. Madylin brought up the statistic that suicide is the "second-leading cause of death" for young people in the 18–25 age range, which is why seeking treatment is critical.
Madylin added that she's heard from a lot of people over the years who say Sawyer "saved" their lives after they heard about his story.
The Sweetens also mentioned that they sell Sawyer T-shirts as part of their efforts around suicide prevention in partnership with the National Suicide Prevention Hotline.
I just think it’s so important in any conversation that we’re having about Sawyer, we’re very passionate in our family about suicide prevention. It is the second-leading cause of death between the ages of 18 to 25, but ninety percent of people who seek treatment are cured. And so many of the messages we get are people saying I’m so grateful to have heard about your brother. He saved my life.
We work with the national suicide prevention hotline, that’s our main place. But you know, people can grab a Sawyer T-shirt. We do T-shirts every year, and all of the proceeds go there.
Everybody Loves Raymond was Sawyer and Sullivan's first job in the entertainment industry. The twins were less than 2 years old at the time the series began, and their sister was 5. The siblings appeared in over half of the 200+ episodes that aired.
While the sitcom was still on the air, Sawyer guest-starred in an early episode of the Disney Channel's Even Stevens as a character named Milton.
Then towards the end of Everybody Loves Raymond's run, he played a younger version of the character Frank McKlusky in the film Frank McKlusky, C.I., which also starred Dave Sheridan, Randy Quaid, Dolly Parton, Kevin Pollak, Tracy Morgan and Andy Richter.
Most of the Everybody Loves Raymond cast moved on to other projects after the series ended in 2005. However, Sawyer and Sullivan left the entertainment industry. Madylin appeared in Eagle Eye, TMI Hollywood, Spare Change and Sam and Me, and guest-starred on Grey's Anatomy and Lucifer. She's also involved in theatre productions, and is currently married with one child.
