There’s a free RPG on Xbox Game Pass that is considered a “masterpiece” by fans, and you shouldn’t miss out on the chance of playing it. There is constant change in the subscription service’s catalog, as new titles are added every month, while others are removed. Just today, for example, a superb and underrated RPG joined Xbox Game Pass, though at the end of the month, a batch of games will be removed from the catalog.
Among the plethora of RPGs in the catalog, one is being reminded of its availability by players. As seen in a post by Reddit user drunkmonk01 on the Xbox Game Pass subreddit, “Clair Obscur is a masterpiece,” a reminder that the title is available in the catalog. The user also mentions that it took them “a few tries to get into [it],” but that it finally happened, and that they now understand why the game is so praised.

The Indie RPG Was A Day-One Release

It’s been months since Clair Obscur’s availability on Xbox Game Pass was established. In fact, the indie RPG was added as a day-one release in the catalog. The game was released on April 24 and has been available for members since. After the change in Game Pass’s structure, which introduced a tier system, the title is only available for Ultimate and PC Game Pass members.
Usually, new additions to the catalog stay for around a year before being removed, so players who haven’t tried out this groundbreaking RPG have a few more months before it is potentially removed from Game Pass. This is common practice, as exemplified by the games leaving Xbox Game Pass in the final days of November. As such, you don’t want to miss your chance to play it without extra fees.
It's A "Masterpiece", Fans Agree

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 truly is a masterpiece. The original Reddit user is not the only one to say so. In comments on their post, users praise the title. User Dannydevitz, for instance, states that it alone has already sold them on the studio’s next game. The title was well-received across the board. Screen Rant’s review of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 gave it a 9/10 score, calling it “a heartfelt love letter to RPGs past.”
The indie RPG is also a contender for the Game of the Year (GOTY) award at this year’s The Game Awards ceremony. Moreover, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 broke records, becoming the title with the largest number of nominations at The Game Awards across all years.
While 2025 has been full of great releases, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is certainly this year’s strongest release, even if it does not please all types of gamers. The fact that it was also a day-one release on Xbox Game Pass helps its case, as more players were given access to it from the very start.
