The One-Punch Man franchise has been abuzz with negative criticism of the series’ third installment, which falls far short of the sublime standards of the previous seasons. One-Punch Man was regarded as one of the greatest comedy anime of all time; however, the anime’s recent pitfalls, which threaten its legacy, stem from a deeper cause.

The studio change from Madhouse to J.C. staff sparked significant controversy over One-Punch Man’s recent animation underperformance, prompting fans and critics to point the finger at J.C. staff as the culprits behind season 3’s lackluster performance. However, the real reason for the season’s poor performance is the anime industry itself.

One Punch Man Season 3 is so Terrible, it Has One of the Lowest-Rated Anime Episodes Ever

One-Punch Man set the standard as the holy grail for comedy anime to learn from. The story is based on an absurd premise that lampoons the universal concept of superheroes with a parodical twist: a hero who ends his battles with one punch. Despite the series' preposterous nature, the manga was a hit, earning an anime adaptation.

Adopting the animation reins for season 1, Studio Madhouse brought the daunting manga to life with a stellar animation that became a mega-hit for fans across the globe. Season 1 of One-Punch Man garnered so much attention that it entered the ranks of the greatest anime shows of all time.

However, the change in production from Madhouse to J.C. Staff augured an unsettling development that reflected in season 2. One-Punch Man's second season was noticeably different; the animation was pointedly sub-standard compared to season 1’s crisp visuals, and it featured pacing issues. Still, the changes weren’t as bad as the third season.

After long stretches of delays and production delays, season 3 of One-Punch Man finally graced the screens, and to fans’ dismay, it was terribly worse than season 2. The third installment featured animated panels that make the show painful to watch for die-hard fans of the eminent series.

In a peculiar scene, Garou was depicted sliding down a hill rather than walking, in a manner that resembled a PowerPoint slide. These animation setbacks drew significant backlash from fans across the media, who expressed intense displeasure over One-Punch Man.

On IMDb, episode 6 of season 3 was rated 1.7/10, labelling One-Punch Man with an unflattering record of one of the lowest-rated anime episodes ever. Amidst this turbulent era for the One-Punch Man franchise, J.C. Staff has been butchered on social media platforms for producing an outrageous sequel. Unfortunately, the root cause runs deeper.

The Real Reason One-Punch Man Season 3 is Bad Is Not Connected to J.C. Staff

It’s easy to blame One-Punch Man’s recent flaws on J.C. Staff, but the reason One-Punch Man season 3 is creatively compromised is tied to the ills of the anime industry. The heavy backlash on J.C. Staff caused Vincent Chansard, One Piece’s leading animator, to reveal crucial details regarding the anime’s production.

According to the veteran animator in an interview, the problem stems from the production committees responsible for financing the anime, not the production studios. Production committees handle funding, deadlines, staff, and even the IPs of most anime, leaving studios with limited decision-making regarding the production process.

Apart from the nuances of production, Chansard also commented on problems in Japan’s anime industry: creators and production teams are overburdened and pressured to meet tight deadlines. These issues have been constant in the industry, as workers are exploited for their passion and not properly compensated for their sacrificial efforts.

Consequently, such situations inevitably lead to poor production of shows such as One-Punch Man season 3, the end result of an exploitative system. Shinpei Nagai, the director of One-Punch Man season 3, also aired his grievances, pleading with fans to stop the “harassment,” as he is bound by NDAs, illustrating that he has no control over the whole saga.

One-Punch Man Season 3 Is Proof that the Anime Industry’s Bubble is About to Burst

One-Punch Man’s sharp, downward swerve from excellence was unexpected, shocking, and a sharp reminder of the crises the anime industry is currently facing. It’s also a salient proof that it can happen to any anime, as the poor work conditions are not limited to one studio; they are an industry-wide problem.

Therefore, as the anime industry is expected to achieve exceptional profitability in the coming years, it needs to re-examine its approach to employee culture. Workers need sufficient motivation to create phenomenal works that captivate fans and enthusiasts worldwide.

However, fans should also exercise patience towards these studios that are often caught in a production quagmire they can do nothing about. Industry leaders in the One-Punch Man debacle, like Shinpei Nagai, are clearly not deserving of communal kvetching, as the real problems stem from the industry. Ultimately, the anime industry needs to observe One-Punch Man’s failings and treat it as a glaring wake-up call.
