Not only do they win awards, but Hayao Miyazaki also wows his audience with his storytelling and animation. Now one of these films will be returning to theaters, over three decades after its debut.
Studio Ghibli has been around since 1985, and since then it has released numerous films, including the 2023 Oscar-winning animated feature The Boy and the Heron. Studio Ghibli movies, especially those directed by Miyazaki, have returned to theaters years after their initial release, with the most recent being Princess Mononoke, which had its 4K IMAX debut back in 2025 and generated over $10 million worldwide. Now, another Studio Ghibli classic will enter IMAX screens next month, decades after its original release.
Kiki's Delivery Service will have a 4K IMAX release for a limited time, starting on March 13. The theatrical re-release will be available in both Japanese and English dubs, and tickets are now on sale. For those who have yet to see the movie, Kiki's Delivery Service is a fantasy film that follows Kiki, a young witch who leaves her family and finds a place in a new town to work on her craft, where she establishes a delivery service. In the Japanese dub, the lead character, Kiki, is voiced by Minami Takayama (One Punch Man), while the English dub stars Kirsten Dunst (Spider-Man).
Other Hayao Miyazaki Films Worth Watching Like 'Kiki's Delivery Service'
Miyazaki started his career in 1963 and has directed many animated feature films and shorts, and Kiki's Delivery Service was his fifth feature film. The filmmaker has a long list of animated features under his belt, many of which are worth watching. If you're after something that's like Kiki's Delivery Service, a story of coexistence, then Ponyo is absolutely worth watching. The 2008 animated feature tells a story of a young boy named Sosuke (Frankie Jonas), who befriends Ponyo (Noah Cyrus), a goldfish-like creature who desires to become human despite her father's (Liam Neeson) objections.
But if you're after a Studio Ghibli film that's pure fantasy, then Spirited Away is a must-watch. This film needs no introduction, as it was the first foreign-animated feature to win "Best Animated Feature" at the 2003 Academy Awards. Recently, Miyazaki spoke about Spirited Away, 25 years after its release, revealing the inspiration for one of the film's most iconic characters, No Face.
Kiki's Delivery Service is available to stream on HBO Max. Follow Collider for more updates.
