Taylor Sheridan's Tulsa King spinoff starring Samuel L. Jackson is undergoing a major creative overhaul, including the title being changed.
Originally titled NOLA King, the spinoff was to be set in New Orleans, with a story focused on Samuel L. Jackson's Tulsa King character, Russell Lee Washington Jr., a hitman who has a history with Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) after their time in jail together. There have been challenges behind the scenes, though, including the showrunner and writer of the pilot episode, Dave Erickson, exiting last July.
Instead of being called NOLA King, the title will now be Frisco King. This is due to a change in setting, with the story moving from New Orleans, Louisiana to Frisco, Texas, and Sheridan will write all eight episodes. A new showrunner has not been named since Erickson's exit, and the spinoff may not have one, which has been the case with some other Sheridan series. Filming will begin in late March in Fort Worth, Texas, which is where Sheridan and David C. Glasser's production campus they opened last year is located.
Sheridan writing all of Frisco King comes after the shocking announcement that he will be leaving Paramount for NBCUniversal after his contract ends, with this being his first new show under CEO David Ellison and Paramount's new leadership. Nevertheless, Matt Thunell, President of Paramount Television Studios, and Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals at Paramount+, have released statements about how enthusiastic they are to have Sheridan writing all the spinoff's episodes:
Matt Thunell: We are honored to have Taylor Sheridan write the first season of Frisco King and bring to life Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic character. Having him pen all episodes of the season with his singular voice will be a treat for fans of Tulsa King and audiences around the world.
Jane Wiseman: Taylor Sheridan continues to build worlds that attract some of the most iconic talent working today, and Frisco King is no exception. Having Samuel L. Jackson step into this universe is a testament to the scale and ambition of the storytelling Taylor is crafting. We’re thrilled to expand this storyline with such a powerhouse creative team and cast on Paramount+.
Jackson first debuted as Russell in Tulsa King season 3, where he appeared in episodes 9 and 10. While the spinoff will be centered on him instead of Dwight, the main show is still continuing, with season 4 renewed before the season 3 premiere. This is not the first time that the success of a Sheridan show has led to a full-fledged franchise and spinoffs, with Yellowstone paving the way for the likes of 1883, 1923, Marshals, and The Dutton Ranch.
Since his NBCUniversal deal for television does not start until the beginning of 2029, Taylor Sheridan's shows will all remain on Paramount+ until then, and this is also where the previously known NOLA King, now retitled Frisco King, will be available to watch once the episodes are released.
