Uintah’s boys wrestling team has won 28 state championships in the past 67 years, including two different stretches of six-straight titles (1968-1973 and 1975 to 1980).

Forty-five years after its last streak of six consecutive titles, the Utes are favored to do it again. A year after winning a fifth straight title, they open the season ranked No. 1 in the Deseret News 4A coaches preseason rankings.

The season officially gets underway on Tuesday.

Eleven of Uintah’s state placers from a year ago were underclassmen. Timpanogos, Mountain View and Ridgeline finished behind Uintah at last year’s 4A state meet, and they’re projected to finish in the same order again.

In the 4A girls rankings, Bear River opens the season as the team to beat after denying Mountain Crest a fifth-straight state championship at the state meet a year ago.

Of Bear River’s 14 state placers last season, five were underclassmen. Mountain Crest only finished with nine state placers a year ago, but four of them were underclassmen.

Uintah finished second behind Bear River in the preseason coaches rankings as it also had five underclassmen place at state a year ago.
