Pat Freiermuth opens up about ‘frustrating’ role in offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers have lost three of their last four games and are noticeably struggling on offense. Their most recent seven-point performance has raised frustrations among Black and Gold faithful and even some players.

Tight end Pat Freiermuth has taken a step back in the offense this season with the emergence of Darnell Washington and the addition of Jonnu Smith. In the 26-7 loss to Buffalo, the Penn State product saw just 17 snaps,

On Wednesday, Pittsburgh’s Cassidy Wood spoke with Freiermuth regarding the recent signing of Adam Thielen, the Steelers’ offense, and more. During their conversation, the fifth-year Steeler opened up about his recent role.

“Obviously it’s frustrating… but I have faith in Arthur [Smith] and understanding his thoughts on the gameplan… just gotta understand my role, hopefully it changes going forward… but at the end of the day I just have to go out there and do what’s asked of me,” said Freiermuth.

This season, Freiermuth has just 26 catches for 298 yards and four touchdowns. While his yards and touchdowns are up to par with previous seasons, his 26 receptions put him on pace for a significant career low.

With five games left in the Steelers’ season, there is little time to turn personal and team struggles around. However, if the talented tight end and his quarterback can get on the same page, it could have a beneficial impact on the team as a whole.
