Texas A&M football coach Mike Elko acknowledged reports that offensive coordinator Collin Klein would leave the Aggies to become the next head coach at his alma mater, Kansas State.

Chris Klieman announced his retirement after seven seasons leading the Wildcats. Klein is expected to succeed him, though it has not yet been announced.

"It's probably not solidified yet. The reports tend to precede the official notifications," Elko said during his national signing day press conference. "I think when you hire really good people, opportunities like that will come. You appreciate that people want to be a part of your program until the next big opportunity for them comes.

"What you're trying to avoid is losing really good assistants to other programs, and that's not the case here. If it turns out to be as the reports suggest, obviously, it's a tremendous opportunity for someone on our staff to take the next step in their career, and I will do everything I can to support and help those endeavors."

Texas A&M is ranked No. 7 in the latest College Football Playoff ranking, all but solidifying its spot in the tournament heading into conference championship weekend.

Klein was named a Broyles Award semifinalist, which honors the top assistant coach in college football. The Aggies' offense averages 261.8 yards through the air, ranking 32nd in the country and sixth in the SEC. They have the conference's second-best ground attack, averaging 192.7 yards and fourth-best scoring offense, averaging 36.3 points.

Texas A&M has the 20th-best offense in the nation, averaging 454.4 yards per game. Quarterback Marcel Reed is one of the most efficient passers in the country and ranks second in the SEC with 25 passing touchdowns.

Elko said he would expect Klein to coach the Aggies' offense in the College Football Playoff if he ultimately becomes K-State's head coach.

"There's a lot that has yet to be determined, but that would be the expectation," Elko said. "Some of the early conversations that we've had about opportunities like this have certainly led me to believe that would be the case."
