The movie hasn't quite broken out internationally, but this was expected, especially considering how its predecessor performed. The musical upon which the Wicked films are based is more of a domestic phenomenon, simply because most people abroad wouldn't have had the opportunity to experience it. That said, Wicked: For Good will likely overtake its predecessor in the long run, having delivered a much bigger debut. It took just 11 days of release for the sequel to enter an elite box office list, which it did by overtaking one of Timothée Chalamet's biggest hits.
Wicked: For Good is now among the 10 highest-grossing musicals of all time at the domestic box office, with a running haul of around $275 million. It's trailing its predecessor, the first Wicked, by around $200 million. Released just last year, Wicked is currently the third-biggest movie musical of all time, behind the Beauty and the Beast remake and Frozen II. Wicked: For Good is currently stationed at the eighth spot, ahead of Mufasa: The Lion King, Moana, and Chalamet's Wonka. Released in 2023, Wonka served as a reboot of Roald Dahl's classic children's property and grossed more than $600 million globally. It's the second-biggest movie of Chalamet's career, behind only Dune: Part Two.
'Wicked: For Good' Can't Catch Its Predecessor on Rotten Tomatoes
Like Wonka, Wicked: For Good opened to mostly positive reviews. It seems to have settled at a 67% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics' consensus reads, "Taking one last lap down the yellow brick road, Wicked: For Good's darker tone and unhurried pacing sometimes get in the way, but this epic conclusion ultimately brings Elphaba and Glinda's story home in rousing fashion." There's no denying, however, that the second film hasn't quite been the critical darling that the first Wicked was, with its 88% RT score and 10 Oscar nominations. Both movies were filmed concurrently under the direction of Jon M. Chu and produced on a combined reported budget of $300 million. It remains to be seen if stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande can earn repeat nominations at the Oscars.
You can watch Wicked: For Good in theaters, and stay tuned for the release of Chalamet's hotly anticipated new movie, Marty Supreme.
