Jess Tyson was bird-slapped while reporting in New Zealand
This is something they don’t teach in journalism school: what to do when a bird flies into your face, hitting so hard it leaves you bleeding.
This unexpected occurrence happened to reporter Jess Tyson, 32, who was doing a piece to camera outside in New Zealand.
Footage shows how she had just finished up and was about to do a second take, when a sudden thump could be heard.
A blurry pair of wings appear on the screen, heading straight for her face and then falling down over her shoulder.
Jess can be seen grabbing her eye and turning away, gasping ‘Holy s***!’

Jess, a former Miss World New Zealand, posted footage of the incident in Auckland’s Central business District on her Instagram page yesterday, as well as photographs of the gash to her eye.
She was able to laugh about it though, joking in the caption that the bird should have gone to Specsavers.

It had been a rough couple of weeks, she added, saying: ‘It was so weird, a couple of weeks [ago] I really badly cut my finger with this knife that went through my nail THEN I fell off my bike in Fiji and injured my arm (with minor fracture or ligament damage according to doctor) and then this happened!
‘Sooooo weird! We did some karakia to try make sure it doesn’t happen again!’
While some do say it’s good luck for a bird to poo on your head, we’re not sure if the same applies when it’s just a blunt force bird impact.
