Joel Edgerton’s new Netflix movie has been earning Oscar buzz for months now, and the film just made a move on streaming that’s bettering its chances of awards gold. Edgerton stars alongside Felicity Jones and William H. Macy in Train Dreams, the new sweeping Western epic that tells the story of Robert Granier, a logger and railroad worker who leads a simple life, yet one full of complex and meaningful depth. Following a limited run in theaters, Train Dreams began streaming on Netflix over the weekend, and the film has quickly risen to the top of global streaming charts, sitting at #3 at the time of writing.
Train Dreams first premiered much earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and the film immediately earned critical acclaim from the few who saw it. It continued its film festival tour throughout the year on its way to earning a Certified Fresh 95% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s also one of the few Netflix movies to play in theaters before its streaming debut. It’s hard not to look at Train Dreams’ early streaming success as a major contributing factor to its continued Oscar buzz, which will only grow as more discover the film.
Based on Denis Johnson’s acclaimed novella, Greg Kwedar teamed with Clint Bentley on the script for Train Dreams, and Bentley also directed the film. This same duo famously delivered Sing Sing for A24 just a few years ago. The critically acclaimed prison drama stars Colman Domingo, and it’s currently streaming on HBO Max. Bentley and Kwedar will also reunite soon for Saturn Return, a romantic drama starring Rachel Brosnahan, Will Poulter, and Charles Melton.
Joel Edgerton’s Apple TV Sci-Fi Series Finally Has a Release Window
Joel Edgerton lit the world on fire last year with his performance opposite Jennifer Connelly in Dark Matter, the sci-fi series based on the novel of the same name by Blake Crouch. Although Season 1 adapts Crouch’s novel in its entirety, Apple renewed Dark Matter for Season 2, and the show began production last year before wrapping earlier in 2025. Collider spoke with Edgerton to promote Train Dreams, and he confirmed that Dark Matter Season 2 will be released on Apple TV in summer 2026. The fate of Season 3 will likely hinge on the reception to Season 2.
Be sure to watch Train Dreams only on Netflix and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
