Thanos is the Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest villain, and it turns out that the franchise will be bringing him back in 2026 through a twist that is sure to make one MCU hero's life even more traumatic. The Mad Titan killed his way through the universe in the MCU's biggest movies to date, Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
Then, Thanos was killed — twice — to end his time in the main MCU. While Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom now assumes Thanos' role in two upcoming Avengers movies, it seems like the franchise will still use the Mad Titan in a key, but likely brief way, in 2026. Thanos's next MCU appearance connects to a Marvel hero he killed.
Thanos Returns In A 2026 MCU TV Show

Thanos is confirmed to return in a new MCU TV show, Vision Quest. The Disney+ series will follow White Vision's journey after WandaVision, with many of Marvel's AIs, such as Ultron and JARVIS, appearing. At least one of the Scarlet Witch and Vision's sons will also appear, as Ruaridh Mollica plays Tommy Maximoff, aka Speed, in Marvel's new Vision series.
At this year's New York Comic Con, where ScreenRant was in attendance, Marvel showed attendees the first Vision Quest trailer. One of the shots in the trailer featured White Vision looking at a screen that showed Thanos killing the original Vision in Avengers: Infinity War. As such, Vision will have to relive his death, with Thanos taking the Mind Stone from his forehead.
At this time, there is no confirmation of whether Thanos could have a bigger role in Vision Quest aside from his appearance in Vision's memory. However, even if he does not show up in the show beyond that brief moment, Thanos could always return in the next two Avengers movies. After all, Doctor Doom killing Thanos is an iconic moment in Secret Wars.
Thanos' MCU Return Will Reopen Vision's Traumatic Past
White Vision looking confused in WandaVision
Where Vision Quest is concerned, Thanos' 2026 MCU appearance is perfect. Vision is a character who has gone through quite a few traumatic moments in the MCU. Dying twice in Avengers: Infinity War is at the top spot of the list, as the hero was first reluctantly killed by the love of his life, Wanda Maximoff, to stop Thanos from taking the Mind Stone.
However, it was pointless, as Thanos just turned back time and killed Vision again. By watching his deaths unfold again, White Vision will relive his darkest moments. What will that do to a character who is trying to reconcile his new form with his old memories? That makes for a solid setup, and I can't see how Thanos' appearance impacts Vision Quest's protagonist.
