We wrote the epitaph for the SN No. 1 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders a little too soon last week.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementBoth the SN No. 2 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams and the SN No. 3 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies were in position to move ahead of IMG Academy with wins last week. The only problem is they both lost in blowouts as Grayson was eliminated from Georgia's GHSA 6A playoffs in a 34-14 loss to the SN No. 10 Carrollton [GA] Trojans, and Centennial was smoked by the SN No. 25 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles in California's Southern Section Division I championship game.
Unfortunately, with their season over, the Ascenders need the upsets to keep coming, and this week they'll be pulling for the unranked Valdosta [GA] Wildcats to upset the new SN No. 2 Buford [GA] Wolves. They'll also need the upset bug to bite the frontrunners in Texas in the weeks to come, including the SN No. 4 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons and the SN No. 6 Allen [TX] Eagles.
Finally, on December 10, they'll need the current SN No. 3 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers to lose to the unranked Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers.
That's a lot to hope for, but so far, it's gone IMG's way. Whether their luck can hold out for at least another couple of weeks is the question moving forward.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementUnderstanding the SN Top 25 through transparency
Like any set of rankings, things may not always make sense at first glance, and there are as many approaches to ranking teams as there are selectors. Some rankings are simply a reflection of what has happened to date, and many of these are algorithm-based, subject to wild weekly swings like the Massey Ratings that are part of The Sporting News Composite Rankings released on Wednesdays.
Other rankings are more predictive – an attempt to account for what has happened, while attempting to line up teams in a way that will reflect potential future results. SN's approach falls somewhere in line with this way of thinking, and each week we first attempt to rank the teams by resume before considering wins and losses and head-to-head results. No system is perfect, but at least understanding our approach can help understand why we have the teams where we do.
As noted above, IMG remains No. 1 for now, but their position remains precarious with no more games remaining on their 2025 schedule.

How the nation's top teams fared last week including the teams ranked in our composite rankings
The Sporting News High School Football Top 25
IMG Academy of Bradenton, Florida, clings to the nation's No. 1 position just ahead of Georgia's Grayson at No. 2.
SN No. 1 IMG Academy [Bradenton, FL] Ascenders
2025 Record: 9-0Last Week: SN No. 1
Next Game: Season has concludedLast Game: 11/1/2025 — IMG Academy 31, NR Hun [Princeton, NJ] Raiders 13 (7-4)W/L Streak: 10 wins
IMG Academy was poised to slip in the rankings this week if last week's SN No. 2 Grayson had beaten previous SN No. 10 Carrollton. But Grayson was beaten soundly by Carrollton, ending their run at a national title, and the previous SN No. 3 Centennial also lost, allowing IMG Academy to retain the top position here for at least another week. The Ascenders are still hanging on by a thread, and now it's the new No. 2 Buford that provides the most direct threat to their reign at the top. But, so far, IMG's decision to cancel their season finale last month vs. current No. 3 St. Frances Academy hasn't cost the Ascenders' their position here in The SN Top 25.
SN No. 2 Buford [GA] Wolves
2025 Record: 13-0Last Week: SN No. 5
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNext Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR Valdosta [GA] Wildcats (12-1)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Buford 30, NR Douglas County [Douglasville, GA] Tigers 15 (9-4)W/L Streak: 13 wins
Buford is the big beneficiary of the losses by Grayson and Centennial, and the Wolves will have a tough semifinal matchup against a 12-1 Valdosta squad. If the Wolves win, they'll take over the No. 1 spot from IMG Academy, but that's no given against this talented Wildcats' program that has a championship pedigree.
SN No. 3 St. Frances Academy [Baltimore, MD] Panthers
2025 Record: 8-1Last Week: SN No. 4
Next Game: 12/10/2025 — vs. NR Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers (12-1)Last Game: 11/1/2025 — St. Frances Academy 35, The St. James Performance Academy [Springfield, VA] Strivers 0 (8-1)W/L Streak: 7 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Panthers continue to prepare for their game against the Corner Canyon [Draper, UT] Chargers at home in the Overtime Nationals Championship on December 10. The game is being billed as a national championship game, and while that's a stretch, it could be the game that moves St. Frances Academy into the top position if they can get some help above them. At the very least, a win in that game would move them ahead of IMG Academy regardless of whether Buford wins or not.
SN No. 4 Southlake [TX] Carroll Dragons
2025 Record: 13-0Last Week: SN No. 6
Next Game: 12/6/2025 — vs. NR Guyer [Denton, TX] Wildcats (11-2)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Southlake Carroll 49, NR Prosper [TX] Eagles 31 (11-2)W/L Streak: 13 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementEven though it was their closest game of the season so far, Southlake Carroll justified its No. 1 position in Texas with a 49-31 win over Prosper last Friday night. Prosper only lost by one point to Allen, the No. 2 team in Texas, earlier this season, and now with the order in Texas affirmed, the Dragons move on to face a Guyer squad that is probably the second best team they've faced in 2025 – right behind the Prosper team they just beat. Guyer's two losses are a 21-14 setback to SN No. 13 Aledo and a 28-27 loss to SN No. 25 North Crowley – the defending Texas UIL Class 6A Division I champions.
SN No. 5 Carrollton [GA] Trojans
2025 Record: 13-0Last Week: SN No. 10
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR North Gwinnett [Suwanee, GA] Bulldogs (12-1)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Carrollton 34, SN No. 2 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams 14 (12-1)W/L Streak: 13 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementCarrollton answered a lot of questions in its 34-14 win over Grayson, most notably, that they deserve to be ranked in the Top 10. In fact, for this list, it's a good enough result to get them to the Top 5 and into the national title conversation with two games to go. If they win this week, they might even get a shot at No. 1 Buford in Georgia's GHSA Class 6A title game. And if they win that, then you'd have to throw their name in the mix, depending on what happens in Texas and in St. Frances Academy's game with Corner Canyon.
SN No. 6 Allen [TX] Eagles
2025 Record: 13-0Last Week: SN No. 7
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. SN No. 25 North Crowley [Fort Worth, TX] Panthers (12-1)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Allen 56, NR Permian [Odessa, TX] Panthers 13 (11-2)W/L Streak: 13 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementWell, Allen got its last breather against an overmatched Permian squad last week. The final three-game gauntlet on the path to a potential state title begins with a matchup against the defending state champions from North Crowley, and if the Eagles survive that, they'll take on the winner of SN No. 12 Duncanville [TX] Panthers vs. Waxahachie which is ranked in The SN Composite Rankings. And if they get through both of those, they could have an undefeated Lake Travis squad waiting for them in the final. That's probably the toughest path to a championship for any team still in the race for a state or national championship.
SN No. 7 Grayson [Loganville, GA] Rams
2025 Record: 12-1Last Week: SN No. 2
Next Game: Season has concludedLast Game: 11/28/2025 — SN No. 10 Carrollton [GA] Trojans 34 (13-0), Grayson 14W/L Streak: 1 loss
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt was an admirable run for Grayson. After losing their 5-star QB Travis Burgess for the season back in August, they turned the reins over to Deuce Smith who guided the Rams all the way to Georgia's Class 6A quarterfinals. It ended there, and with it, Grayson lost its best chance yet to capture an elusive national title. The good news for the Rams is they'll probably be right back in the thick of it again next year. But that's little consolation right now for a team that had a title within reach.
SN No. 8 St. Thomas Aquinas [Fort Lauderdale, FL] Raiders
2025 Record: 12-1Last Week: SN No. 8
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR Riverdale [Fort Myers, FL] RaidersLast Game: 11/28/2025 — St. Thomas Aquinas 34, NR McArthur [Hollywood, FL] Mustangs 7 (10-3)W/L Streak: 12 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSt. Thomas Aquinas handled McArthur with ease last Friday, and now they get a Riverdale squad sporting an identical 12-1 record. However, Riverdale's one loss might say more about their chances in this game than their 12 wins, collectively. That one loss came in a 14-8 setback on September 19 in a road game at the Cypress Lake [Fort Myers, FL] Panthers. Cypress Lake was a first-round loser to the Key West [FL] Conchs in Florida's FHSAA Class 3A playoffs – a team that saw its playoff run end in a 56-6 loss to the Northwestern [Miami, FL] Bulls. All of those results suggest that Riverdale will be in over its head against these SN No. 8 Raiders this Friday night.
SN No. 9 Bishop Gorman [Las Vegas, NV] Gaels
2025 Record: 11-1Last Week: SN No. 9
Next Game: Season has concludedLast Game: 11/25/2025 — Bishop Gorman 44, NR Arbor View [Las Vegas, NV] Aggies 7 (9-3)W/L Streak: 7 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementBishop Gorman throttled the Arbor View Aggies last Tuesday night to win Nevada's Open Division state championship. It isn't enough to lift them into the national title conversation, but the Gaels will be back next year for another run at national glory.
SN No. 10 DeMatha [Hyattsville, MD] Stags
2025 Record: 11-0Last Week: SN No. 11
Next Game: Season has concludedLast Game: 11/23/2025 — DeMatha 20, NR Gonzaga [Washington, DC] Eagles 13 (7-5)W/L Streak: 21 wins
DeMatha captured the WCAC championship in a hard-fought win over the Gonzaga Eagles. It should be enough to keep them in the national Top 10 by the time the 2025 season concludes around the rest of the country.
SN No. 11 Edna Karr [New Orleans, LA] Cougars
2025 Record: 12-0Last Week: SN No. 12
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNext Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR Catholic [Baton Rouge, LA] Bears (10-2)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Edna Karr 49, NR Evangel Christian Academy [Shreveport, LA] Eagles 20 (9-3)W/L Streak: 26 wins
Another week, another blowout win for Edna Karr which doesn't appear to have any peers in the Louisiana prep ranks this fall. This Friday's opponent, Catholic, isn't your run-of-the-mill 10-2 football team, but there's nothing to suggest they've got the talent to go toe-to-toe with this Cougars' squad for four quarters.
SN No. 12 Duncanville [TX] Panthers
2025 Record: 10-1Last Week: SN No. 15
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNext Game: 12/6/2025 — vs. NR Waxahachie [TX] Indians (11-2)Last Game: 11/29/2025 — Duncanville 34, NR Klein Collins [Spring, TX] Tigers 7 (11-2)W/L Streak: 9 wins
Duncanville's next opponent is a rematch with the Waxahachie squad that handed them their only loss so far in 2025 – a 28-27 setback on September 19. It's one of three big rematches in Texas this weekend, and all of them were close in the regular season.
SN No. 13 Aledo [TX] Bearcats
2025 Record: 13-0Last Week: SN No. 13
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR Ryan [Denton, TX] Raiders (12-1)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Aledo 55, NR Arlington Heights [Fort Worth, TX] Yellowjackets 0 (11-2)W/L Streak: 13 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementIt's never easy to beat a team like the Ryan Raiders twice, but that's exactly what Aledo will have to do if they want to advance to the Texas Class 5A Division I semifinals. Aledo won the regular-season meeting between these two teams, but only by a single point in a 15-14 win on October 3. It won't be a surprise if this is another tight one, and it wouldn't be a shock to see either team win this game.
SN No. 14 Randle [Richmond, TX] Lions
2025 Record: 13-0Last Week: SN No. 14
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR Iowa Colony [TX] Pioneers (12-1)Last Game: 11/29/2025 — Randle 83, NR Bastrop [TX] Bears 20 (11-2)W/L Streak: 29 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementJust like Aledo-Ryan above, Randle and Iowa Colony will stage a rematch of their one-score regular-season matchup. Unlike the defensive affair between Aledo and Ryan, however, these two engaged in a 49-42 shootout won by Randle. The Lions just refuse to lose, and they'll be going for their 30th straight win, and something about this game somehow doesn't feel as close as the first matchup. Perhaps, we're influenced by Randle's 83-20 win over Bastrop last week while Iowa Colony was lucky to escape the Brenham Cubs with a razor-thin 31-30 victory. So, while a close game wouldn't be a complete surprise, this Randle squad just seems to get better and better the further they get into the Texas UIL Class 5A Division II playoffs.
SN No. 15 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles
2025 Record: 10-3Last Week: No. 25
Next Game: 12/13/2025 — vs. NR De La Salle [Concord, CA] Spartans (12-0)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — vs. SN No. 3 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies (11-1)W/L Streak: 5 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSanta Margarita gets a week off to prepare for their state championship bowl game against California's northern champion – the legendary De La Salle Spartans. We'll preview that here next week, but suffice it to say for now – a three-loss Santa Margarita is ranked, and undefeated De La Salle isn't.
SN No. 16 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies
2025 Record: 11-2Last Week: SN No. 3
Next Game: Season has concludedLast Game: 11/28/2025 — SN No. 25 Santa Margarita [Rancho Santa Margarita, CA] Eagles (10-3) 42, Centennial 7W/L Streak: 1 loss
There was only one team Centennial couldn't beat in 2025, and unfortunately, they had to face them twice. In a season when the Huskies finally beat their nemesis Mater Dei twice, they also suffered two losses of their own to one team as Santa Margarita beat them, 33-27, in overtime on August 28 before blowing them out, 42-7, last Friday night at the Rose Bowl. That second loss ended the Huskies' season, unfortunately, and they'll spend the offseason ruing their inability to avenge that earlier loss to Santa Margarita.
SN No. 17 Grimsley [Greensboro, NC] Whirlies
2025 Record: 13-0Last Week: SN No. 16
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementNext Game: 12/4/2025 — vs. NR Weddington [Matthews, NC] Warriors (13-0)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Grimsley 24, NR Reagan [Pfafftown, NC] Raiders 7 (10-3)W/L Streak: 29 wins
Is this the week that Grimsley is finally challenged on the field? Weddington is probably the best team on paper that the Whirlies have faced since their 21-14 win over Richmond, Virginia's Varina Blue Devils on October 3. Whether or not the Warriors are good enough to seriously challenge Grimsley remains to be seen.
SN No. 18 Mater Dei [Santa Ana, CA] Monarchs
2025 Record: 8-3Last Week: SN No. 17
Next Game: Season has concludedLast Game: 11/21/2025 — SN No. 3 Centennial [Corona, CA] Huskies (11-1) 28, Mater Dei 27W/L Streak: 1 loss
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe Monarchs have finally, officially, abdicated their throne, and it came much earlier than anybody could have expected for a program that entered the season as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country. Mater Dei's loss to Centennial ended their back-to-back run of national titles, but ultimately, the Monarchs will be fine in the long run. They have the best talent in the country in any given year, and they've got a lot of young prospects who should be able to right the ship pretty quickly.
SN No. 19 St. John Bosco [Bellflower, CA] Braves
2025 Record: 9-2Last Week: SN No. 18
Next Game: Season has concludedLast Game: 11/14/2025 — NR Orange [CA] Lutheran Lancers 20 (3-8), St. John Bosco 19W/L Streak: 2 losses
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementAfter a flashy 9-0 start that carried them into the No. 1 position in the SN Top 25, the Braves' season only lasted two more games. First, there was the loss to archrival Mater Dei in the regular-season finale. Then on a rainy Friday night in Southern California, the Braves were ousted from California's Southern Section playoffs in one of the most shocking postseason results in Golden State history. A season that once appeared destined to end in another national championship for St. John Bosco terminated instead in the opening round of California's postseason, and the Braves will spend the offseason assessing how it all unraveled so quickly.
SN No. 20 South Oak Cliff [Dallas, TX] Bears
2025 Record: 12-1Last Week: SN No. 19
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR Port Neches [TX]-Groves Indians (13-0)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — South Oak Cliff 45, NR Terrell [TX] Tigers 17 (12-1)W/L Streak: 11 wins
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementFor the second straight week, the Bears will go up against an undefeated team. That didn't matter in last week's 45-17 win over Terrell, and we suspect it won't matter against this Port Neches-Grove squad. But, you still have to go out and play the games, and if the Indians get some breaks, they probably have the talent to make it interesting.
SN No. 21 Bixby [OK] Spartans
2025 Record: 12-0Last Week: SN No. 21
Next Game: 12/6/2025 — vs. NR Owasso [OK] Rams (10-2)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Bixby 49, NR Broken Arrow [OK] Tigers 17 (9-3)W/L Streak: 15 wins
Bixby rolled past Broken Arrow last Friday night, and there's only one team standing in their way of an eighth straight Oklahoma state championship. This would be their fourth in a row at the OSSAA Class 6A Division I level with the first four coming at the Class 6A Division II level, and they'll face an Owasso Rams' squad they beat, 49-21, on August 28 in the season opener.
SN No. 22 Baylor [Chattanooga, TN] Red Raiders
2025 Record: 11-0Last Week: SN No. 22
Next Game: 12/4/2025 — vs. NR Brentwood [TN] Academy Eagles (11-0)Last Game: 11/21/2025 — Baylor 56, NR McCallie [Chattanooga, TN] Blue Tornado 35 (10-3)W/L Streak: 11 wins
Baylor will take on a Brentwood Academy squad Thursday night that they were scheduled to play back on September 5. Mother Nature didn't cooperate that night, and the game was ultimately canceled when the two teams didn't have available dates that lined up to reschedule it. But looking back, if they had played, one of them would enter this game with a loss. Instead, we get two 11-0 teams in Tennessee's TSSAA Division II Class AAA championship game. Baylor is the favorite, but we expect Brentwood Academy won't go down without a fight.
SN No. 23 Creekside [Fairburn, GA] Seminoles
2025 Record: 13-0Last Week: No. 23
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR Kell [Marietta, GA] Longhorns (11-2)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Creekside 35, NR Lithonia [GA] Bulldogs 7 (10-3)W/L Streak: 13 wins
This is potentially one of the most intriguing matchups in the entire country Friday night as undefeated Creekside takes on a two-loss Kell squad that just blew out the previously unbeaten Cartersville [GA] Hurricanes, 48-21. Kell's own two losses were of the blowout variety, too, however – a 37-6 loss to the Sequoyah [Canton, GA] Chiefs way back on August 29 and a 38-7 rout at the hands of the Lowndes [Valdosta, GA] Vikings on September 12. Both of those games were roughly three months ago, and Kell's big win over Cartersville has us wondering if they can slow down this Seminoles' squad whose closest game is a 48-28 win over the Rome [GA] Wolves way back on August 15.
SN No. 24 Clay-Chalkville [Pinson, AL] Cougars
2025 Record: 14-0Last Week: SN No. 24
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. NR Saraland [AL] Spartans (13-0)Last Game: 11/28/2025 — Clay-Chalkville 30, NR Muscle Shoals [AL] Trojans 13 (12-1)W/L Streak: 14 wins
Clay-Chalkville pulled away from previously undefeated Muscle Shoals last week for a 30-13 win, and now Friday night, they'll play for Alabama's AHSAA Class 6A state championship against another unbeaten squad from Saraland. We're expecting a pretty good tussle in this one, but ultimately, it feels like the Cougars year to win it all.
SN No. 25 North Crowley [Fort Worth, TX] Panthers
2025 Record: 12-1Last Week: Unranked
Next Game: 12/5/2025 — vs. SN No. 6 Allen [TX] Eagles (13-0)Last Game: 11/29/2025 — North Crowley 46, NR Coppell [TX] Cowboys (10-2)W/L Streak: 9 wins
North Crowley was ranked here in the preseason Top 25 before losing, 37-35, to the unranked Rockwall [TX] Yellowjackets way back on September 18. But they've rolled off nine straight wins since then to advance to the quarterfinals of the Texas UIL Class 6A Division I playoffs in defense of their 2024 state title. They go up against their toughest foe, yet, in SN No. 6 Allen Friday night with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
