Kill Bill had to cut a major action sequence from the original film, but an unlikely source has helped Quentin Tarantino finally bring the scene to life. As with many of Quentin Tarantino's films, the process of bringing his scripts to the screen results in plenty of lost characters, changed arcs, and cut scenes.
One of the most infamous, "Yuki's Revenge," would have been a grisly and chaotic addition to the events of Kill Bill: Vol 1. While the scene was unfortunately cut, fans got a taste of it in the release screenplay for the film. However, thanks to a major video game developer, the scene has finally been remade and can now be seen by fans.
Why "Yuki's Revenge" Was Cut From Kill Bill
In the original script for Kill Bill, there was a sequence that would have introduced Yuki, the twin sister of Gogo. Following Gogo's death alongside O-Ren at the hands of the Bride, Yuki would follow the Bride to California and stalk her for a time — with the ice cream truck that Yuki uses to follow the Bride even appearing in the background as an easter egg in the finished film.
In the scripted scene, Yuki eventually follows the Bride and confronts her. Despite the Bride giving Yuki a chance to leave their feud behind, Yuki is dedicated to avenging her sister and, taking an ultra-steroid made by Bill, faces off with the Bride. The confrontation ends with the Pussy Wagon destroyed and the Bride exhausted but victorious.
Mortally wounded, Yuki makes one last attempt to kill the Bride, but overdoses from the steroid and fades away before she can deliver a killing blow. The scene was intended to serve as a big connecting set-piece, even explaining what happened to the Pussy Wagon. In the Kill Bill film, the Bride merely mentions that it "died on her," without further elaborating on the fate of the vehicle.
The scene was always meant to be filmed, but was cut for pacing and budgetary reasons. However, copies of the original Kill Bill script that circulated online revealed the circumstances of the battle, with many fans accepting the scene as canon but unseen.
An Animated Version of "Yuki's Revenge" Has Been Recreated In Fortnite
The popular free-to-play video game Fortnite is no stranger to incorporating different IP from other mediums, with previous updates featuring the likes of Darth Vader, Goku, and the Simpsons into the game. However, "Chapter 7: Pacific Break" takes it a step further by not just bringing the Bride into the game but featuring a recreation of "Yuki's Revenge."
The scene, animated in the Fortnite visual style, brought back Uma Thurman as the Bride and was directed by Quentin Tarantino. Introduced as "Chapter 5: Part II," the sequence picks up after the death of Vernita Green. While the sequence does incorporate a number of visual elements familiar to Fortnite fans, the overall editing, style, and tone of the scene fit into the Kill Bill experience.
The action and dark comedy of much of the rest of the film is on display in the sequence, especially once Yuki arrives in Los Angeles and acts like a stereotypical tourist. The confrontation between the pair quietly reflects the themes surrounding vengeance that are key to the film, with the Bride trying (and failing) to convince Yuki to simply leave her own revenge behind.
While the violence has been toned down to reflect the T-rated Fortnite, the actual combat, dialogue, and gunplay feel very consistent with the original movie. It also neatly fits into the actual narrative of the film, as long as fans can imagine the Fortnite touches and characters being replaced with regular people.
How Tarantino Fans Can Check Out "Yuki's Revenge"
There are two ways for fans to check out "Yuki's Revenge." One of them requires them to create an account with Fortnite. Luckily, the free-to-play game is available on many platforms, even outside standard gaming consoles. The video can be accessed as part of the "Pacific Break" season, which is meant to focus on California as a whole.
The other way to check out the scene is to watch it on the big screen as part of Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair. The re-release of the film fuses the two Kill Bill movies into a singular cinematic experience, with a total run-time of 281 minutes. Clocking in at over 4 and a half hours, the film makes several subtle tweaks to the experience.
These chances include the removal of Vol. 1's cliffhanger ending and Vol. 2's recap sequence, as well as the colored restoration of the Bride's bloody duel with the Crazy 88. The inclusion of "Yuki's Revenge" also adds to the run-time, effectively creating the Kill Bill movie that Tarantino always envisioned but never had the full freedom to make.
"Yuki's Revenge" also serves as a fun contrast to the anime sequence included elsewhere in the film, speaking to Kill Bill's ability to easily hop between media while retaining the core story and emotional core. With "Yuki's Revenge" always lingering in fans' minds as a lost part of Kill Bill, it's exciting for fans to check out the new scene as part of the full experience.
